Dick Harden! LMAO on that one!!
August 13, 2008 at 2:33 am
No game tonight, big Wednesday double-header instead. Time to put two games in the W column. Hopefully the rain is over tomorrow.
LET’S PLAY TWO!
GO CUBS GO!
August 13, 2008 at 5:29 am
Brewers won, need two tomorrow.
August 13, 2008 at 8:18 am
No wonder why he goes by Rich. Cub fans have already experienced the Dick Pole era.
August 13, 2008 at 11:46 am
Well put Keith! Figures- the only time I’ve had a chance to watch the Cubs lately was when Z got lit up Saturday, but that’s water under the bridge. Fortunately, this is NOT the Braves of old.
August 13, 2008 at 1:38 pm
goes without saying we can’t afford any 3+ inning Marquis specials and Harden needs to go more than 5 today. Could really use a 103 pitch complete game from one of them. I’m pretty skeptical about their chances today.
August 13, 2008 at 2:41 pm
How come the Cubs rarely get a complete game performance?
August 13, 2008 at 3:29 pm
The reason why is the Cubs have a lot of Strikeout pitchers in Zambrano, Harden, Dempster & suprisingly Lilly. Lilly leads the team in K’s. How that is I will never know. Marquis well I guess that don’t need explaining.
August 13, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Here’s one STRIKEOUT pitcher who also COMPLETED games: Bob Gibson.
WORLD SERIES Records:
8 CONSECUTIVE complete games.
7 CONSECUTIVE wins.
Most K’s in a game (17).
Most K’s in a series (35).
http://espn.go.com/sportscentury/features/00014115.html
August 13, 2008 at 6:52 pm
I’m not usually into stats…but:
Fergie Jenkins pitched 267 complete games and K’d 3192 batters.
Warren Spahn 382 complete games. 2583 K’s.
Both pitched in the last 45 years.
August 13, 2008 at 7:48 pm
Jason Marquis still sucks.
August 13, 2008 at 9:36 pm
good start to the day, but I am not very impressed about using 4 pitchers in a 10-2 rout. WTF?!
It’s not that the Cubs have strikeout pitchers, it’s that they can’t keep their pitch count down. Why the fuck was Marquis throwing 93 pitches in 5.1 innings yet he had only allowed 2 runs? He only had one strikeout! It’s too many hits, too many walks and too many deep counts before finishing off batters.
Sabathia has 52 K’s in 57 innings with the Brewers, yet has 4 cg’s in 7 starts. His last start was a cg with 9 k’s and yet threw only 103 pitches. Zambrano has 100k’s in 150 innings and no cg’s.
August 13, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Good game, er umm…ass-whopping today.
Marquis pitched well today except for the bases loaded jam, but even then he got out of it. BAD baserunning by Soriano turning a double into a single because he thought it was a homer.
Bobby Cox keeps getting ejected to hold the major league record. It’s funny. 6 road wins in a row. And Edmonds is still the man!
GO CUBS GO!!
August 13, 2008 at 10:21 pm
If I’m Lou, when Soriano pulled that crap, I pull him out of the lineup right there and sit his butt down.
Soriano is a hotdog. If Lou lets him get away with this, what will keep him from pulling this clown act in one of our playoff games? You could tell Brenly was pissed.
August 13, 2008 at 10:34 pm
If I had legs I would’ve run that out.
August 13, 2008 at 10:53 pm
When you’re playing on a team that hasn’t won a WS in 100 fucking years, there’s nothing to be a hotdog about….SorryONo PLEASE take note.
Go Cubs!
August 14, 2008 at 12:01 am
nice 2 run hit by fukodome. hopefull he turns back into fuk-u-do-me and not a fuk-a-dummy
August 14, 2008 at 2:14 am
Cubs sweep the double header and 7 straight road wins and only 2 games under .500 on the road now. Bullpen was scoreless in both games. Get them tomorrow for a 6-0 finish against the Braves.
GO CUBS GO!!
Braves = EPIC FAIL
August 14, 2008 at 2:33 am
Braves are pathetic, gotta take tomorrows game, then take 2 of 3 from Florida. Day off on Monday, and then home for 6. Win at least 4 of 6 at home then…
you know what? Cubs can put themselves in a real sweet position in the next two weeks.
Right now everything is clicking on all cylinders Pitching, Hitting, and Defense. But, will it continue? Let’s hope so.
August 14, 2008 at 3:48 am
That was nice. There was no way that would have happened under Dusty Butt. The Cubs, like my old baseball coach used to say, “kicked the dog when it’s down.” They beat the excrement out of a team that they should have. If they can pound Old Man Glavine tomorrow, it’s a sweep. The Braves can’t score that many runs against good teams. (And Arizona is not a good team this year.)
August 14, 2008 at 3:48 am
What I meant is that under Dusty Butt, the Cubs never seemed to beat up on teams they should have.
August 14, 2008 at 4:09 am
The Cubs sweep a doubleheader. They should go back to scheduling doubleheaders and have two gates like they did today. The only thing that can be hard is extra inning games. They should schedule a few each year on Sunday afternoon followed by a night game and then make the next day an off day for both teams. Players would end up with more days off, so I don’t know why they’re so against playing two. Teams with empty seats might also raise attendance by playing more games on Sunday (the weekend).
Guessing – There aren’t that many pitchers throwing complete games these days because of the “pitch count”. Pitchers have to throw harder now while more pitchers had finesse, Maddux-like, deliveries in the old days. I’m sure there were some like Gibson who did throw hard back then, but nothing special was done because of that. The starting rotations also had 4 pitchers, they had doubleheaders back then too, and only played eight fewer games in the regular season. Lowering the pitchers mound in the late 60’s, I think, makes the pitcher’s delivery more strenuous even though Gibson handled it. Pitch count standards today are a shoe that fits few. Durable pitchers probably don’t have to be reeled in while the less should be throwing less or maybe not at all. Again, just guessing why things are different now. No denying, today’s pitchers have a lot of arm/shoulder injuries.
August 14, 2008 at 4:23 am
Why won’t the Brewers go away?
How do they beat the crap out of the Nationals and Padres when we always have problems with both of those teams?
Bob Uecker sucks too.
August 14, 2008 at 2:32 pm
it looks like that last series against the brewers will mean something
August 14, 2008 at 2:39 pm
If Dusty Baker was managing the Cubs right now, they would be playing near .500 ball at best…I honestly believe that. Thank God that bum is outta here.
I’ll feel even better about the Cubs chances if they can take 2 of 3 against FL…and win today, too. The Marlins have had the best of the Cubs for too long.
August 14, 2008 at 6:45 pm
anyone read Rosenblahh today? He takes Soriano to task for hot dogging (which is good) but he pretty much thinks the subsequent head hunting pitch was good too. I wouldn’t have blamed the Braves for hitting Soriano in the ass or something, but throwing at the head? I don’t think so. He says the Cubs can retaliate NEXT year against the Braves. For those of you waiting for the Cubs to retaliate against the Braves for Renteria’s vicious slide into Fontenot last year, Renteria was traded in the off-season, so he got away with it. I say have Cotts or Howry hit Chipper Jones in the ass TODAY not next year. BTW, amazing percentage of sheeple commenting on Rosenblahh who don’t give a fuck about Soriano hot dogging it. Fuck the sheeple!
August 14, 2008 at 6:47 pm
well, we know what a Dustfuck-managed team would have done, it would have gone in the tank the moment Soriano got hurt. What a fucknut!!!
August 15, 2008 at 1:41 am
Somebody explain to me AGAIN why Howry still has a fucking job here….PLEASE!!!!
August 15, 2008 at 1:43 am
I am fully expecting the Cubs to release Bob Howry within the next day or two. If not, then this team will not go anywhere.
August 15, 2008 at 1:46 am
FroDog
Is this something you heard somewhere? I hope to hell you’re right because I agree with you. What a pathetic piece of shit.
August 15, 2008 at 2:06 am
I didn’t hear anything Chucky.
I am just assuming this is the next option if Lou is INDEED a good manager. Then he shall do what any other good manager would do with this peice of shit.
August 15, 2008 at 2:17 am
Thanks Fro Dog! I know what I’d do. Flush his sorry goddamn ass down the toilet.
August 15, 2008 at 2:18 am
I said before, Howry is only useful in mop up. I was dead wrong, he isn’t useful in that either!!
This guy is like a time bomb, sometimes it doesn’t go off, but most of the time it does.
He is not a legitimate part of this ballclub, and he needs to be released.
August 15, 2008 at 2:24 am
I think it’s safe to say that Woody is not all the way back yet.
This bullpen is still suspect in my mind. They go on streaks where they mow down the opposition, and then they go on streaks where they can’t get anybody out. Got to be consistent down the stretch.
August 15, 2008 at 2:50 am
Hey Nemo, is this the kind of crap you were talking about?
“I just really hope
that coming down on Soriano like this doesn’t cause some kind of batting issues on his part—Say he is too worried about hustling out of the batters’ box that he messes up his swing. I see the problem with what he did, I don’t understand why it is such a big issue. It didn’t cost the game, and he realized on his own that it was a mistake. Just let Sori concentrate on hitting bombs since that is kinda what he does best.”
This was off the Bleed Cubbie Blue site. I love it, “gee wilkers Beave, I sure hope Sori doesn’t get sore or nothin. We don’t want him messen up his swing by making him play like a real professional.”
August 15, 2008 at 2:54 am
I understand we won the game but Wood made it interesting also. Erniesarmy hit it on the money. This bullpen needs help. Unfortuantely, we are stuck with what we have.
Howry should be released and Lieber (I cannot believe I am saying this) should be put back on the team. He is not hurt. He is just on the shelf because Sammardjia has been kicking ass.
As I mentioned earlier, I fully EXPECT Howry to be released in the next 24 hours.
August 15, 2008 at 3:09 am
yes howry is a fucking piece of shit and has to go now. he is a danger to give leads up along the stretch and fuck our run up. he is a reminder of the dusty baker era, faliure and uselessness.
August 15, 2008 at 3:36 am
After somebody explains to Chucky why Howry still has a job, please explain it to me because it doesn’t add up. Unbelievable: the guy is pure liability…he doesn’t have it.
FroDogs, I hope you are correct.
As for the sheeple on bleedcubbieblue, screw ’em: does anybody honestly believe that Soriano gives a shit about what any fan says about him? Including us?
Fan: “Alfonso, if you don’t hustle out of the batters box, Lou is going to spank your bottom and make sit on the bench”.
SorryONo: (dials phone) “Doctor, Rosenblahh said mean things about me…it’s stressing me out and I can’t sleep at night, please help me!”
HA HA HA HA HA
Now if the Cubs can put an ass whupin” on the Marlins, life will be just grand!
HOY HOY
August 15, 2008 at 6:19 am
Nice to see a win and a season sweep. Ugly game though. Lily did ok, but Howry sucks donkey balls. Marmol seems back to his amazing self. Hopefully Lou doesn’t overuse him over the next month and a half.
Cubs only a game under .500 on the road, which is ok. A good team should finish 41-40 on the road and do better than .650-.700 at home.
Lets go have a fish fry!!
GO CUBS GO!!
August 15, 2008 at 8:11 am
Cubs only need to go 12-10 on the road the rest of the way to finish 41-40. If they go just 10-9 at home they’d finish 96-66. Brewers would need to go 26-14 the rest of the way to equal that. The Cardinals 28-10. 96 wins should be enough to hold off the Cardinals. Don’t know about the Brewers. Probably, but the Cubs have never blown a playoff race in August or September have they?
August 15, 2008 at 1:32 pm
The Cubs blew a playoff race in Aug-Sep back in 69′. (To manage that collapse the Mets had to go gangbusters.)
The elimination # for a division title is 37 and for a wild card I think it is 33. If the Cubs play well, one of these should be sewed-up by the end of the first week in Sep.
Yesterday’s game is an example of why the Cubs are in front to the extent they are; the offense doing the job when the pitching doesn’t cut it.
Ramirez has some leg problem from hustling. I hope it’s nothing serious.
August 15, 2008 at 4:31 pm
I was being facetious about blowing playoff races, jf. Things look very good for the Cubs, but we all know from the past that they are not above blowing it.
Ramirez has a hip contusion (bruise) listed as day-to-day.
August 15, 2008 at 6:07 pm
Soriano should know that no one reads a newspaper anymore, and if they’re going to read one, they aren’t going to read Steve Rosencrap or Mike Downey.
August 15, 2008 at 6:12 pm
I was 19 in 1969 and remember that season well – I wish I could forget!
Here’s how it went down: The Cubs were up 5 games on the Mets on Sept. 3. I remember where I was, laying on the beach in Hermosa listening to the scores on the radio (there was no ESPN, or Sports Talk of any kind in those days and sometimes you had to wait for the next day to get all the scores) and thinking to myself, “they have this baby in the bag. No way the Mets can catch them this late in the season.” Well, starting Sept 3 they went on to lose the next 8 games in a row, and 11 of their next 12. The Mets, on the other hand, starting Sept. 6, won 10 in a row and 13 of their next 14 games. Also, they won another 9 games in a row from Sept. 21 to Oct. 2. During that same stretch, the Cubs went 7 and 7. So, on Sept. 9 the Cubs were in second place 1 game back of the Mets, and by Sept. 18 they were 5 down finishing out the season 8 games behind the Mets.
To say that I was shocked is an understatement. I was so pissed I threw most of my Cub memorabilia out the bedroom window. Somebody wrote a poem about that season that started out, “The Cubs will shine in 69, but Ernie’s rhyme was the same ole line…” I don’t remember the rest of it, but I remember the guy being majorly pissed. Cubs fans of that year have never forgotten. That’s why those of us who are old enough to remember don’t get too excited about things anymore. Only when that trophy is presented to Cub management after the final game of the World Series will we believe. Until then it’s, we’ll see.
August 15, 2008 at 6:31 pm
I think the Cubs can get at least another 20-22 wins judging by the schedule. With 20 wins, that means the Cardinals would have to finish 26-12 over their last 38 games (.684 win percentage) just to tie. With 22, they would have to go 28-10 (.737).
For the Brewers, if the Cubs win 20 games, they would have to go 25-16 (.610) over their last 41 games. The Cubs win 22, and the Brewers have to finish 27-14.
August 15, 2008 at 6:46 pm
I just read that Daryle Ward is 4 for 40 as a pinch hitter this season. It’s time for him and Howry to go. This team just needs a little fine-tuning. I think Micah Hoffpauir is the same player as Ward only younger, AND he could probably do better than .100 as a pinch hitter. Howry just needs to get his butt out of town before more fans run on to the field after him.
