One down two to go. We have to continue to mash the ball in this series, because we will see how good this team is after we finish with the bucs. The good news is that the Brewers begin a series with the Cards and we will make up ground on one of the teams if we win and not lose ground on the other if we lose. The Cubs are in a very good position with 31 games to go. I think if the go .500 the rest of the way they will be in pretty good shape. I could care less if they win the Central or if they are just the Wild Card winner because if we don’t win a World Series who cares about a divsion chamionship.

I loved the offense tonight. It was amazing. Many slumps were broken, including Derek Lee, Jim Edmonds, and most importantly Kosuke Fukudome. Cubs now winning games both at home and on the road. One thing I do not agree with was pitching Kerry Wood tonight. We may need him the other two games, most likely on Wednesday when Jason Marquis takes the bump. I understand the need to give him an inning or two in a non-save situation, but this was an ass-whooping. I would have left Howry in until he gave up a run or two, there was quite a cushion to do so. He did go through an inning without giving up one after all, why not give him another?

Lets get them again for the 9th series win!

    GO CUBS GO!!

    Fukudome!!!!!

I must say Ramirez has shown hustle this year.

Sports Illustrated picked the Reds for second in the NL Central. Dusty has them in an exciting battle for last. Good Reds players are hitting the wall in prolonged slumps. Players are having meetings without the manager. The Brewers are a very good team, please let Dusty manage them for a while.

I still hate fucking Dust Bucket for not leaving town sooner.

  4. genrebuster's avatar genrebuster Says:

And I still hate Hendry for allowing that to be the case.

  5. genrebuster's avatar genrebuster Says:

BTW, Big Z is NOT the ace of the Cubs staff. Alert the media.

  6. Fro Dog's avatar Fro Dog Says:

Zambrano needs extra rest. This next week should be the time give him an extra day or two. We need this guy.

  7. armycubsfan's avatar armycubsfan Says:

Ugh! That’s all I can say.

    Zambrano sucked ass.
SorryOHNO forgot how to catch a routine fly ball.
We are using a lot of the bullpen, when we will most likely need them tomorrow with Marquis.

Just another game where we are playing horribly against the Pirates. I would like to win this one, but we do deserve the loss for this bullshit.

    Boo.

  8. armycubsfan's avatar armycubsfan Says:

Damn, walks are sure clogging the bases right now. They are so clogged they flood onto home plate! Great hitting discipline by the Cubs tonight, one saving grace of this bad game.

  9. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

I think Zambrano just pitched his way out of starting the first game in the playoffs. What a pathetic performance from our so-called “ace.”

Lucky Soto was on a tear or we’re looking at another loss to a bottom dweller.

Cotts and Howry should be left off the playoff roster. Neither one can be counted on.

I really get tired of Zambrano’s meltdowns out there what is with this guy anyway? Does he need medication or what? Except for his last start he has been garbage.

  10. armycubsfan's avatar armycubsfan Says:

August is not Zambrano’s month. He has had plenty of good games this season and been far from garbage. His ERA has come up some, but I still have faith in him. Because when he is on, nobody hits him. And hey, his bat is quite valuable too.

In other news, I think our offense just scared the living excrement out of every other MLB team tonight.

9 straight series wins, best since 1907 when they won their first WS.

    GO CUBS GO!!

  11. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

Hey guys, this is from Al over at BCB:

“More history: the Cubs are 31 games over .500 for the first time since September 30, 1984, the last day of that regular season; they finished 1984 at 96-65. Their peak that year was 32 games over, at 90-58 on September 15. Before that, the last time the Cubs were 32 games over .500 was on September 2, 1969, at 84-52.”

Right Al, but you know what happened on Sept. 3 1969? The Cubs went on to lose 10 straight and effectively hand the division over to the Mets. I wouldn’t be bringing up 1969 if I were you. Oh, and I also wouldn’t mention 1984 either, something about a 2 to 0 lead, then blowing 3 straight to the mediocre Padres. Bringing up years of horrendous failure does not encourage me, Al.

“History is being made every day with the 2008 Cubs. I marvel. Keep it going. Onward to tonight.”

The only “history” I want to see is a pennant and a World Series victory, everything else is a “yawn,” been there before. The sheep over at BCB really kill me. When the Cubs actually do something in the playoffs…you know WHEN IT REALLY MATTERS…then come see me about “history.” Until then, SHUT UP!!!!!!!!

“August is not Zambrano’s month. He has had plenty of good games this season and been far from garbage.”

Army, Zambrano has been garbage since July (and except for his last start). His ERA since July has been pushing 6. Why is he not good in August? He always said he pitches better in hot weather, August is certainly hot. I don’t get the guy.

You are right, he has had plenty of good games for us, but we need him to come up with better outings than he’s been giving. That’s all I’m saying.

  13. jf's avatar jf Says:

Didn’t like seeing the Triple A Pirates get 9 runs off of Cub pitching.

  14. Fro Dog's avatar Fro Dog Says:

An ugly win but we will take it.

Zambrano needs to be skipped a start or at least an extra day or so of rest. Who knows. This is concerning.

The Brewers keep winning so this race might come down to the last few games.

  15. AndersonvilleAl's avatar AndersonvilleAl Says:

I was thinking of a good analogy for that “history,” which is great in some respect. I mean I would rather be 82-50 than 50-82 and five games ahead than five games behind.
That said, making history in the regular season in baseball is a little like being a preseason all-American in college football or basketball. I’d rather be an all-American after the season.
I mean the Mariners made history in the regular season — 116 wins and no World Series — with Piniella. What has Seattle done since then?

I know there’s going to be panic in the streets if this happens, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Brewers end up overtaking the Cubs for the division. The Brewers have an easier schedule in September than the Cubs. They get six games against both the Reds and Pirates and four against the Padres. However, they do have one against the Cards, three against the Mets, four in Philadelphia and six against the Cubs. My hope is losses to the latter group off-sets wins to the former. The Cubs also have to take care of business against Milwaukee if they want to win the division.

The big number I’m concentrating on is 21. That’s the magic number to get into the playoffs. I know getting the wild card would suck a little bit, BUT part of me would rather play one of the teams from the East than the Diamondbacks. The Phillies or the Mets don’t really scare me as much. The Mets definitely don’t scare me. Their bullpen is awful. The Phillies went down 7-0 tonight. I think if the Cubs had a 7-0 lead, they would have made it stick.
In a short series, I don’t like the idea of the Cubs facing Webb, Haren and Johnson. Even if it’s at home, one slip-up and that series could be over. The only bad thing obviously about the wild card is no home field advantage.

BUT to get to the World Series, the Cubs have to get in the playoffs any way they can. I don’t care if it’s Division Champs or Wild Card as long as the Cubs at least get to the World Series.

  16. ksmc2000's avatar ksmc2000 Says:

Zambrano went through the same shit last year. He sucked in August, but seemed to get his shit together in September. He will never be the Cy Young candidate that he toutes himself as. He is too inconsistant through the course of the entire season to even be considered.

A few positives came out of this fucked up game. Soto had a career game with seven RBI’s. This should make him a lock for ROY. He has done a great job with one of the best pitching staffs in the league.

With this win on Tuesday, the Cubs have won nine straight series. The last time this happened was in 1907. Givin the fact that they are starting to break records from before the 1908 season, maybe it is their year. We are witnessing things that have never happened in all of our lifetimes. I hope it continues.

  17. genrebuster's avatar genrebuster Says:

As I posted previously Zambrano is NOT an ace. That’s ok, I still want him on my team.

I’ll say it again, Z doesn’t have a chance in hell to win a Cy Young until he learns to harness his emotions. In fact, at this stage he might learn something from observing Dempster, Harden and Lilly work….and too bad he didn’t learn more from Maddux, one of the true masters.

I wouldn’t start him in Game 1 of the playoffs. I would insist he meet with a sports psychologist on a regular basis. HA HA

Glad to see the Cubs win but I was surprised when I pulled up the box score this am, they were up 5-1 last time I checked.

    Nice catch SorryONO.

    tick tock…tick tock…tick tock.

  18. genrebuster's avatar genrebuster Says:

Or was it 5-3 (?)…moot point.

  19. jf's avatar jf Says:

The thing about the Cubs in particular is that you just want them to win a WS no matter how they get there and do it.

As pointed out above, the WS title is what makes history or puts the stamp of immortality on the winning team. In that sense being a division winner (without going on to win the WS) doesn’t cut it. Baseball has, however, done things to the “pureness” of the competition over the years which I think could and sometimes does result in a convincing division winner being the best team in baseball (even if that team doesn’t win the WS). It’s all whether you place the emphasis on the accomplishment of getting to postseason and winning the WS as opposed to wanting to feel and remember that the WS winner is or was the best team in baseball that season.

For now, let’s just sweep the Triple A Pirates.

  20. armycubsfan's avatar armycubsfan Says:

Well, I must say I feared the worse with Marquis, but he’s past the 7th inning now. And I love the small ball too. Lets finish’em off!!

  21. armycubsfan's avatar armycubsfan Says:

And get out the brooms. Outstanding pitching today, including by Jason Marquis. Cubs now undisputedly with the best record in MLB. Lets hope the Fucktardinals win tonight so the Brewers can drop back a bit more.

    And lets get those Phillies!

    GO CUBS GO!!

  22. AndersonvilleAl's avatar AndersonvilleAl Says:

I think the starting rotation (if the Cubs make the playoffs) should be: Dempster, Harden then Zambrano.

  23. Fro Dog's avatar Fro Dog Says:

Don’t let Jason Marquis’ outing fool anybody. Sean Marshall still should be the 5th starter.

It would be sweet for the Cubs to beat the living shit out of the Phillies. I hate that fucking team. Three out of four would be nice.

  24. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

Who was that starting pitcher today and I don’t want to know what he did with Jason Marquis.

Seriously, even Sean Estes had a complete game shutout in September 2003-but he was otherwise pretty useless. I don’t expect any more outings like this from Marquis, but feel free to prove me wrong.

Phillies are very hot too. Cubs never play well against them. I’ll take a split.

  25. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

I got no complaints about their performance, they took care of business like a top of the line team should.

Now let’s see how they take care of a team that has historically caused them problems. We lost 2 of 3 to these guys in May, it’s payback time!

  26. ksmc2000's avatar ksmc2000 Says:

I can live with 7-2 against the shitty teams. Now, the Cubs have to get down to business. September will be a true test to see just what this team is made of. If they have a good month, anything goes in the playoffs.

  27. Bonk's avatar Bonk Says:

Geovany Soto is Spanish for “The Latin Jesus Christ”. That guy’s fucking incredible.

Someone down here actually had the balls to suggest Jay Bruce should be Rookie of the Year. Dream on, dipshit.
