Bronson Arroyo=the offense taking an extra day off.
September 5, 2008 at 4:39 pm
This is a pivotal series for the Cubs. If they can’t take two of the three against this AAA team the rest of the month does not bode well. At least we are in an offensive park in Cincy so hopefully the bats will come alive. If they some how lose this series, don’t like the pitching match-ups at all it will be difficult to see this team doing well in the playoffs.
Going to Chicago in two weeks for the first time what is a must do while i’m there (i.e restaurants night clubs) Thanks for any info
September 5, 2008 at 5:33 pm
Which game are you going to cubsfaninAR?
Harry Carry’s restaurant behind the park is good. The steaks are up there in price but still really good.
Also, Ballo is an Italian restaurant off of Dearborn and Illinois downtown has the best spaghetti. Italian beef and fries are also tasty.
September 5, 2008 at 6:49 pm
I’ve just watched the 1st inning of this abortion. It’s over. And I mean the season. So what if they make the playoffs. It’ll just be a repeat of last year. I’ve fucking had enough of this shit.
GOD-FUCKING-DAMMIT!!!!!! THIS THE FUCKING GODDAMN CINCINNATI REDS!!! MANAGED BY FAR AND AWAY THE WORST MANAGER IN THE FUCKING HISTORY OF BASEBALL. THIS IS COMPLETE AND UTTER BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 5, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Another thing: Ted Lilly better NOT be in Cubs uniform next year. I never liked him, and I never will. Fucking punk bitch.
September 5, 2008 at 7:09 pm
I am going to Cincy tomorow and will be at the Cubs game. I am in the right field bleachers and will make sure I boo old Dust Bucket. Poor Reds fans!!
The Cubs will pull out this game because Dusty Baker sucks!
September 5, 2008 at 7:35 pm
I’ve been looking forward to going for about three months, but since I’d have to get scalped tickets anyway, I’m not going to bother.
If I want to pay money to be pissed off, I’ll go watch a Michael Moore “I Hate America” piece.
September 5, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Fro
I am going to the last game of the Brewers series and the first of the Cardinals series. Was really looking forward to it two weeks ago when I snagged the tickets, not so much right now.
Thanks for the insight on the eateries definitely wanted to go to Harry Carey’s just wasn’t for sure the prices nor atmosphere.
September 5, 2008 at 8:50 pm
just logged on and checked the ballscores….wow.
pathetic.
tick tock…
September 5, 2008 at 10:30 pm
heartbreaking, heartrending, miserable, piteous, pitiable, pitiful, poor, rueful, sorry, wretched
September 5, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Looks like the season is too long for this team. They’ve quit. The pressure has gotten to them from wherever it came.
Tired of listening to fans calling this team the best in the NL. Correction: They were the best team in the NL.
September 5, 2008 at 11:26 pm
“Piniella and first base coach Matt Sinatro left Chicago at 8 a.m. for a five-hour drive to Cincinnati. With Sinatro driving and Piniella napping, they missed a turnoff and wound up in northeast Ohio—the wrong end of the state.
They stopped at a gas station, bought a map and backtracked along two-lane roads, arriving at the ballpark only two hours before the first pitch. Travel time: 8 hours.”
First of all, why the fuck were you driving? Having gay sex the night before? Second, BUY A FUCKING GPS-Problem solved. IF only it were so easy to solve the Cubs myriad problems.
September 5, 2008 at 11:34 pm
Or at least use MapQuest although that thing sucks. At least it takes you there.
Four games up on the division and eight on the Wild Card all of a sudden as I speak. This is going to be one long September.
September 6, 2008 at 2:05 am
This should be the time in a great season that the Cubs put their foot on the oppositions throat and push very hard. Instead, they are taking a shit. If they don’t figure out how to win again soon, all the hard work to get to this point will be for not.
My hopes for a World Championship for this season is dwindling on a daily basis. Have these guys lost their heart? Ramirez and D-Lee are sucking balls lately. These guys are suppose to be the leaders of this team. Does DeRosa and Theriot have to carry this team the rest of the way?
If they don’t get their fucking shit together pretty soon, it will be just one more of many lost seasons in it’s pathetic history.
September 6, 2008 at 2:22 am
People have asked me how did it feel in 1969 when the Cubs collapsed, I have had a hard time putting it into words, now I can tell them, see 2008 that’s how it felt.
Fellas, as I have said on this site and others like it, it will take a special manager, and special players, to overcome the intense pressure of so much failure in the history of this organization.
I just don’t think Lou Piniella is that manager. Still plenty of time, but this is ridiculous.
September 6, 2008 at 3:24 am
I just find myself numb and not caring anymore. … I fully expect them to collapse. At least if you do something, do it spectacularly well. This would be a spectacular collapse. I really don’t know what is wrong, but if they do miss the playoffs, I don’t know if I can even get excited about 2009. It’ll be the same shit all over again. This is so reminiscient of Dusty’s stay. Great first year. Collapse in the second year. Shitty team in the third year and even shittier team in the fourth. Hopefully, Hendry and Lou will get the boot if that happens. FUCK!
Meanwhile back at the ranch, the Marlins have two championships. The Diamondbacks have one. The Rockies have been to a World Series. The Cardinals broke a 25-year drought. The Red Sox won two titles after 86 years. The White Sox won one, and, just for good measure, the effin’ Brewers will probably win this year. Or maybe it’ll be the Rays. That way all four of the latest expansion teams will have made the World Series and three will have won titles. FUCK!
September 6, 2008 at 3:25 am
I should say “Good first year.” Neither 2003 or 2007 featured a great team.
September 6, 2008 at 3:28 am
oh yeah and DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!
September 6, 2008 at 5:26 am
“We just have to win one game,” Soriano said. “That’s all it takes. One game. It’s very sad. Everybody’s not happy.”
*******************************
It’s not sad, just PATHETIC. Please stop talking, SorryONo…it’s time to practice your bunny hop. Happy September, give my regards to Dusty! BARF.
As previously stated, if they miss the playoffs…or back in only to get their asses kicked in the 1st round (like last year), I’ll still consider the season a success IF Hendry is fired.
September 6, 2008 at 5:28 am
Al, that last paragraph “meanwhile, back at the ranch…” pisses me off. Because it’s true!
tick fucking tock.
September 6, 2008 at 5:57 am
After 100 years we don’t get CC Sabathia but make a move and get Harden, after all Larry Rotchester is skilled caring for sore armed pitchers. With big Z having issues with the rotator we could very well be in self destruct mode ala 1969 erniesarmy I remember. 1969 left me with post truamatic baseball stress syndrome.
Genrebuster win loss or draw fire fat ass Hendry.
September 6, 2008 at 10:42 am
Kirk, I don’t see how Hendry and Larry can keep their jobs if the Cubs fold. Of course, I didn’t understand how Dusty kept his after 2004…and then again after 2005. What was I missing?
I wanted them both gone at the end of last year…and if the Cubs had been sold at the end of last year, I bet that would have happened.
It is starting to look like this Cubs team has quit.
I’m not sure that all of the younger fans are able to comprehend the years of losing and pressure that go along with it. Maybe not all players are affected by it…but I think the team and organization (dis-organization, in this case) do feel it. I rolled with it myself until I was about 35…now the years of losing, “Cubbies are lovelable losers” bullshit just pisses me off.
We’ll see how this season ends up. It’s not over until Fatass Hendry sings. Hopefully he’ll be singing with a WS trophy in hand (don’t bet the farm on that) and if not I’d like to request “Sentimental Journey” as they ship him out of town ona “Slow Boat To China”. Jagoff.
Right now the Cubs are not the best team in the NL, that’s for sure. They have no killer instinct. Where is the team leader? Who is the team leader?
Will somebody please tell DP Lee that he is really playing for the Marlins, maybe he’ll snap out of whatever is ailing him.
September 6, 2008 at 10:50 am
I think Lou needs to bench DP Lee and play Micah Hoffpauir. That boy has gotta be telling Lou to put him out there and use his nasty bat. I’m quite disappointed that Lou has only used him once as a pinch hitter since the callups came up on Monday. He needs to get in the game. It will be another uphill struggle today with Marquis going to the mound. You never know what you are going to get with this guy. He could go 7 innings 8 K’s, no walks or ruuns, and a small scattering of hits or he could be tattooed and gone by the 4th or 5th inning. I don’t like the guy very much but let’s hope he pitches well today.
MICAH HOFFPAUIR AT FIRST BASE!!
PLEASE WIN TODAY!!
September 6, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Hendry is in his 7th season as GM-the Cubs are working on their 100th season of not winning a World Series. Hendry is not a great gm, maybe not even good, but, far from the worst GM that this pathetic franchise has had. I will be happy to see him go, but, FAILING TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES, YET FIRING HENDRY, IS NOT A SUCCESSFUL SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WINNING A WORLD SERIES IS A SUCCESSFUL SEASON-EVERYTHING ELSE IS BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There’s no baby steps here. Win at all or shut up!
I really don’t know what the fuck happened to get this team playing like shit. I DO NOT believe that it was the pressure of past failure that STARTED this. They were 85-50, won 7 in a row, looking to win 100, National League Favorites. Most were confident. However, as we see, panic is never more than 3-4 games away, and NOW I have little doubt that the pressure of the past 99 failures is really getting to them.
If Piniella won’t play Hoffpauir for DP LEE then I am afraid Piniella has a little more dusty in him than we previously thought-and it will obviously cost us.
September 6, 2008 at 12:29 pm
win it* all
September 6, 2008 at 1:22 pm
As for Sabathia, that was a bad bad mistake not getting him and allowing the Brewers to get him. I think the problem is quality or pickings from the Cub farm system and maybe not thinking the Brewers would or could do what they did. Looks like he’s losing the gamble on Harden and maybe Gaudin had back problems before he was traded too. All of a sudden Gallagher, Murton and Patterson sounld like a hefty price to pay for those pitchers, especially Gallagher. Lieber can’t pitch either. They were right about Dempster. Conclusion: If possible, sign Sabathia over Dempster (or both) and fire Jim Hendry.
This team was built around offense. Oh where, oh where has it been? They can’t hit at the Great American Ballpark, except for Koyie Hill, and they can’t hit at Wrigley Field. Is there somebody injured we don’t know about?
Why is Piniella feeling he needed to get away from baseball after a day off? I think Piniella is buckling for whatever additional harm that can do at this point. He is probably the best manager the Cubs have had for many many moons. But maybe he should quit if the Cubs don’t at least win a pennant this season.
What the hell. I want to see Hoffpauir at 1B too.
September 6, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Another correction: Definitely sign Sabathia over Dempster and sign both if at all possible.
I also forgot: Keep Zambrano out for the rest of the season. Hand the ball over to Sean Marshall. (I feel strongly about that. What the hell.)
September 6, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Nemo.
I just re-read my post regarding Hendry/successful season. You know what?…you’re right. I don’t know what I was thinking, trying to be positive I guess, in the event that the Cubs don’t win it all (which at this point seems likely).
I’d like to ask everybody to forgive my moment of weakness, it won’t happen again. (baaaaaaaaaaaaa)
Hoffpauir at 1st and Z sitting out the regular season (what remains) sounds good to me.
September 6, 2008 at 4:52 pm
“I really don’t know what the fuck happened to get this team playing like shit. I DO NOT believe that it was the pressure of past failure that STARTED this.”
No, it was the announcement that something was wrong, and then the official confirmation, that Zambrano was hurt, and, the recurring problems with Harden.
What that did was plant the seed of doubt in their heads, and those of you that have played sports know that’s all it takes to start a team, or athlete, spiraling down. Then the pressure of 100 years began to creep into their minds and that produced the “perfect storm” we now see occurring on the field.
We shall see what kind of manager Piniella really is in these next few days. So far, to me, he seems more stubborn (playing Lee in the 3 hole for example) than brilliant. These players need him to provide leadership NOW!!! Good managers know how to make the proper adjustments that can kick start a team back on the road to success.
September 6, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Al Yellon, head honcho sheepie over at BCB said this –
” Keep this in mind.
Two weeks ago, the Dodgers looked dead, having lost eight in a row. Now they’ve won six straight and are on the cusp of first place.
The Cubs will turn it around.”
Two things wrong with that statement:
1) The Cubs are not like the Dodgers, or any other MLB team for that matter. The Dodgers have a history of comebacks and success. The Cubs have neither.
2) The Cubs do not have a history of turning it around. They have a history of doing just the opposite.
This is what I don’t get about the guy. He’s been a Cub fan for quite a long time from what I’ve heard and read, and yet he is incredibly ignorant with regards to the history of their failures. Or, perhaps, he just chooses to ignore it.
I am not saying it’s over for the Cubs, and no one else on this site is either, but it is getting down to the point where losing must stop and winning must return. And the problem with the Cubs is most times losing stays and winning goes bye bye.
September 6, 2008 at 5:36 pm
Al Yellon is a fucking douchebag. Plain and simple. And I AM saying it’s over for the Cubs. I’ll happily eat my share of crow IF I’m proven wrong. And I do hope I’m wrong. But until then…..
September 6, 2008 at 6:56 pm
We will see how Piniella does in the weeks ahead…I still believe he is a much better manager than the toothpick chomping idiot will ever be. Is he good enough to win it all with the Cubs? We shall see. Tick fucking Tock.
As for the Dodgers, you can add one more thing to the list:
The Dodgers are managed by Joe Torre. A proven winner and a man who is no stranger to “pressure” (from several angles, can you imagine working for Steinbrenner all those years?).
Piniella has won a WS as a manager, too…but doing it with the Cubs, that’s another story yet to be written.
September 6, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Nice…walk KKKorey AND walk in a run in the same inning.
Go Cubs Go!
September 6, 2008 at 9:20 pm
14-5…WTF?
Put Howry in NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
September 6, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Ugly win, but I’ll take it. Marmol’s grand slam is just a solo shot on his personal stats, those runs go to Wuertzless. Soriano played well. Marquis pitched iffy, but those walks didn’t score much of anything, and he hit a homer. Good game by D Lee on his birthday. Hopefully this begins a winning streak.
GO CUBS GO!!
September 7, 2008 at 12:33 am
Also, despite the damage done, the Cubs still carry the best record in baseball tied with the Angels.
September 7, 2008 at 2:22 am
Not an impressive win by any stretch. Our bullpen was horrendous, and we need them if we’re going to make the postseason. Marquis did fine, as a matter of fact he’s been one our most consistent pitchers of late. Lee and Soriano picked up the whole team (Ramirez is still in a slump) and carried them to this win.
As much as the Cubs needed this, they need the win tomorrow just as bad. After tomorrow they do not have another team below .500 on their schedule, and all of them are fighting for a playoff spot.
The fact that they have the best record in the NL means squat if they can’t get this thing turned around to where they are playing consistently good baseball. One win does not mean they are back, they still have a lot of work to do if they are to be taken seriously as a contender.
September 7, 2008 at 8:24 am
I was at that game yesterday and must say it was very enjoyable. The night was absolutely perfect and my $22 dollar seats in the right field bleachers were great. Weurtz should be traded to the Lansing Lug Nuts.
Some comments about the Great American Ball Park. If you ever get the chance check that park out it is absolutely beautiful and a very family and fan freindly place. The sight lines are great the bathrooms clean and accessable just a great place to watch a game. When tickets go on sale next year I am going to get mine for the entire series and stay at the Baymont across the river for $69. I can take in 3 games for less than the Wrigley Field broker scams that the greedy Tribune bastards invented to screw the working man. Quite honestly and this will sound like blasphemy I would rather watch a game at Great American than that old piece of shit the monument to futilty and big rip off Wrigley Field. I would also say that if I was a player I would rather play at Great American now bullpens to run into down the lines, no distorted wall lines in foul territory behind the plate put there to add expensive seats. The Yankees say it was time to exit the fabled “house that Ruth built” its definitely time to exit Wrigley.
September 7, 2008 at 11:24 am
Howry AND Wuertz for a bag of shells.
September 7, 2008 at 12:14 pm
Genre
You are going to have to do better than that if you really want that bag of shells
September 7, 2008 at 3:18 pm
FUCK THIS TEAM!!!!
FUCK KERRY WOOD!!!!
FUCK RONNY CEDENO!!!!
FUCK THIS SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FUCK WINNING THE WORLD SERIES!!!!
ISN”T GONNA HAPPEN.
September 7, 2008 at 3:19 pm
What a disgusting loss.
September 7, 2008 at 3:25 pm
I bet Baker is enjoying the hell out of this.
I wonder what Piniella is thinking right now?
September 7, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Great American Ballpark: New monuments to Cub futility are being born every day.
We are the Cubs. This is what we do.
September 7, 2008 at 3:30 pm
This is typical Cub baseball, they’ve been playing like this for over 50 years with no end in sight.
This organization needs a new owner with an entirely new front office. The stench of losing permeates this organization from the front office to the players on the field. Only a complete fumigation, including a new stadium, can bring this team into the 21st century.
Chucky is right, I can’t see this club doing much in the postseason – IF they can even make it. When a Dusty Baker team can beat you 2 of 3, and take out your closer, you know you’re in deep trouble.
September 7, 2008 at 3:37 pm
As much as Kerry Woodyagetanout sucked, the Cubs sowed the seeds of this debacle by stranding 10 runners-including 7 runners in just the last 3 innings. They were content with a 3-1 lead. You would think after the Reds scored 8 fucking runs in the last two innings last night that the Cubs would think it could happen again and would keep trying on offense. BUT, NO, 3 was enough. How’d that work out?
September 7, 2008 at 4:03 pm
“he Cubs sowed the seeds of this debacle by stranding 10 runners-including 7 runners in just the last 3 innings.”
And this has been going on for what, three weeks now?
There’s no question about it, the Cubs are choking on offense and it’s hurting the pitching.
September 7, 2008 at 6:49 pm
In the last 10 games, the cubs are 3-7…tied for the WORST record in the NL (with Atlanta, Washington, Pittsburgh and Arizona). The only ML team that tops that (1-9) is the Baltimore Orioles.
Andrew MacFAIL is at it again, that joker! HA HA HA HA HA
Maybe if Hendry was fired TONITE, the Cubs would respond with some playoff intensity baseball (?)….what the fuck, give it a try!!!
September 7, 2008 at 7:11 pm
If I’m Piniella, this is the batting order for Tuesday:
1. Theriot
2. De Rosa
3. Soriano
4. Ramirez
5. Lee
6. Soto
7. Johnson
8. Fukudome
9. Dempster
And if Lee continues his slump, I move Soto to the #5 hole. As far as Soriano is concerned, if he puts up a stink I tell him, “Do you want to play or not? If you want to play, you will bat 3rd, if you don’t like it, take a seat on the bench. Remember, I manage this team, not you.”
Lou needs to let this guy, and the rest of this crew, know who’s in charge. They’re playing like a bunch of “Barbie” boys (you know, the “lovable little Cubbies”) – they need a kick in the ass.
I also tell them that I won’t take this kind of play from a team I manage. If the players I send out there can’t get the job done, then I will start putting in guys who will at least make the fundamental plays. This team is starting to look like a team that is feeling sorry for itself. You cannot allow that to continue! I let them know that if we are going to go down, I will not go down with a whimper!
September 7, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Bat Soto 5th now, I like that order.
How many solo shots has Soriano hit this year?
September 7, 2008 at 7:33 pm
I don’t know offhand, Genre, but I would guess it must be quite a few. Having a guy with that kind of power leading off is just stupid baseball. Soto 5th would be ok by me. Ramirez needs Soriano either in front, or behind, him in the order for protection. Lou has to make that change.
By the way, speaking of Lou, did you guys see this –
“CINCINNATI — Lou Piniella chose not to speak to reporters after Sunday’s game.”
That’s it Lou, way to be a leader, way to stand up for your team. He left Lee, Wood, and Cedeno alone to face the media, what a worm. That’s something Dusty would do. When the going gets tough….run!
September 7, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Wood hadn’t pitched since Tuesday. On the radio they were blaming that for the poor outing. Whatever, he was awful. The Cubs haven’t won their share of low scoring games. Marshall did ok, but I guess the Reds are just too good for this team. Lou should have a talk with the team, but I don’t know what he should say…
September 7, 2008 at 9:19 pm
How about “Do SOMETHING to actually earn your goddamn paycheck!!”
September 7, 2008 at 11:26 pm
How about:
“Soriano, everybody is NOT happy…and you are NOT batting leadoff anymore…we need you to hit later in the lineup. If you don’t agree, I’m gonna give you a fucking right to the brain” (thank you Buddy Rich).
“Ronny, what the hell were you doing, you should have made that play, error my ass…don’t let it happen again. Now get out of here before I implant my foot in your ass. You’ll be bunking with Neifi if you don’t shape up.”
“Wuertz, did you not learn your lesson in the minors? What the hell is wrong with you…Tick tock…”
“Howry. Dammit, what is that stench…Larry has your pink slip, get the fuck outta here”.
“Lawrence….you just might be next…or I might not have any fucking pitchers left. Explain to me again how you kept your job…never mind, I just remembered who the GM is….BARF.”
“Zell. For the love of God…sell the Cubs…and bring me a fucking bag of shells…NOW, you money grubbing jagoff.”
“Aramis. Time to step up and be a leader. Let me know tomorrow if you can’t handle it because time is running out, capiche?”.
“DP Lee…what the hell is wrong with you? Wake up. You’re not a Fucklin anymore, DEAL WITH IT!”
“Zambrano. Time to get your shit together…once and for all. Get help or get out of town. http://www.shrinkmyhead.net”
“Harden. If you are not feeling well, you beter tell me…or I’ll kick your ass. hell, maybe I’ll just kick Billy Beane’s ass.”
“Sinatro. You dumbass….Mapquest or DIE.”
“Dusty. How the hell did you last as long as you did? Pass the toothpicks!!!!”
—fine
September 7, 2008 at 11:31 pm
I thought Soriano’s outburst at the plate yesterday…and his assist today, throwing out a runner at the plate…would inspire the Cubs. We give Soriano a fair amount of shit here…but I’ll admit he has stepped up AT TIMES when others haven’t…too bad it’s not contagious.
September 7, 2008 at 11:47 pm
*should have been “hit, my ass” (Ronnie). sorry Mitch.
September 8, 2008 at 9:40 am
I wanna know why in the hell somebody was not warming up in that pen yesterday when Wood was in there. He hadn’t pitched in 5 days!! Usually when closers have not thrown in that long they tend to be a little to strong and every fastball they throw is high or they just have problems finding the plate, which was exactly the case with Wood yesterday. I know Lou has to know that, so why wasn’t say Angel Guzman in the pen just in case Wood had this problem or why didn’t Lou use Woody earlier in the week to get him regular work. You don’t let you’re closer sit for 5 days and expect him to be sharp! C’mon Lou wake up!
September 8, 2008 at 1:38 pm
All right, which one of you is this guy:

“Police note Rosario, who was wearing a red Cubs shirt and blue Cubs hat, refused to cooperate with officers and had blood shot eyes and smelled of alcohol.”
Gee whiz, Bonk, that could be any of us.
September 9, 2008 at 8:34 am
It was Lou.
