So far, so good … Four runs all with two outs in the third
September 14, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Zambrano looks good thru three. The Cubs need to tack on a few runs on in the next few innings and get ready for the game tomorrow. I would love to see the division wrapped up in the next week. Currently the Brewers are getting crushed in Philly and it looking like the Cubs could have a seven game lead going into tomorrows game.

Big ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 14, 2008 at 9:30 pm
big z threw a no hitter I guess the sheeple are excited now
September 14, 2008 at 9:30 pm
now thats pitching!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats why we are cubs fans. and thats whats gonna get them to the world ser!!
September 14, 2008 at 9:31 pm
UN-FUCKING-BELIEVABLE!!!!!! Zambrano pitched one hell of game. I don’t know what else to say.
September 14, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Carlos was definitely BIG Z toinight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Clutch performance all the way. Cubs really needed this win to reestablish thier dominance and the Big Z came through like an ace.
What makes me mad is this is an example of the kind of overwhelming stuff he has when he learns to harness his temper. He could be a 20+ game winner every year if he learns to keep his emotions in check.
This is also huge in terms of confidence going down the stretch and into the playoffs. No doubts now, the Cubs will be in the playioffs as the division winners. Now to get the home field advantage.
What a game, first complete game no hitter for a Cub pitcher since Milt Pappas in 1972.
September 14, 2008 at 9:37 pm
“big z threw a no hitter I guess the sheeple are excited now”
Tonight, we’re all “sheepie.”
September 14, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Hey Robert
No it looks like fans of the Chicago Cubs are excited. If you can’t get excited over a no hitter in the midst of a playoff race from a man that missed his last start, you may want to find another sport to watch.
September 14, 2008 at 9:51 pm
I cannot believe this. I watched this whole game from start to finish.
armycubsfan said in the previous post that he was attending this game. I was hesitating to go to the game. Sucks to be me.
Unbelievable.
September 14, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Fro, oh man, you could have gone to the game?
I live in L.A. so there was no way for me, but to have been on the brink of going, and then not go has got to be rough.
My condolences.
But listen, if the Cubs have one game to win the pennant, or the World Series, and you can go to the game, and you don’t…then just go ahead and kill yourself. 🙂
September 14, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Holy S&@% that was fun! I never thought I would see a Cubs no-hitter in my lifetime. Now I’m hoping for another lifetime first in late October.
September 14, 2008 at 10:23 pm
I was hesitating to go but I didn’t get off work until 5 and it was about a two hour drive. I feel stupid. I am glad I got to watch it with a couple friends.
September 14, 2008 at 10:43 pm
I couldn’t tell you how many thousands of Cubs games I’ve watched in my lifetime-lots of close calls. I always remember that FUCK Eddie Milner getting a hit with two out in the 9th off Chuck Rainey, August 24, 1983!
So, what are the odds I would not see the game that they finally get the no-hitter? We were out of town and got home around 7. We got water in the basement, so I am wet-vaccing. I take a break and see the Cubs game is not on the DVR. Cubs.com doesn’t say where the game is on. Check comcast, espn, and wgn and not on. Check here and Fro says it’s on WGN, I check again and they are showing a Newhart re-run. I guess ESPN forced WGN to black out the game for those not in the immediate Chicago area. I checked the boxscore on cubs.com, and see Z has a no-hitter through 4. Seems good, but I got clean up to do and I forgot about it for what seemed only about 30 minutes. All of a sudden my mom calls and asks me if I’m watching the Cubs-which she would NEVER do unless it was BIG. So, I asked her if Z was doing what I think he is doing (not saying no-hitter or anything like that). She says two outs to go. Then she SCREAMS 1 out to go! I get the game on the radio quick-then I realized maybe ESPN is breaking in with the coverage. Sure enough, they have broken in and I get to see Kasper call the last batter and see the last out. IT IS SO FUCKING AWESOME!!!!! I can’t imagine having seen this from the beginning.
Don’t get me wrong, this is NOT AN ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTE for winning the World Series, but it is still FUCKING AWESOME!!! This is the kind of thing real teams do. My entire life, no World Series and no no-hitters-one down and one to go. Still got some work for this team to do, but did I mention that THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME!!!!
September 14, 2008 at 10:54 pm
He only walked one. Good to see that he’s back sharp.
The Brewers are making it easy for the Cubs. Still important to win going into Oct (IMO) if for no other reason than to have the confidence.
Phillies now tied with Brewers for WC.
September 14, 2008 at 11:30 pm
I see armycubsfan went to the game tonight, he better have a report soon. I want to know what it was like to be there in person.
September 14, 2008 at 11:34 pm
I just logged on and saw the news…I’m speechless. And very happy for Zambrano and the Cubs!
I didn’t see the game….but this could be a defining moment in Z’s career, I hope so (I read that he kept his emotions in check until the very end). My heartfelt Congratulations to Big Z.
I think we all agree with jf that it’s important for the Cubs to keep playing well going into October.
September 15, 2008 at 12:43 am
The Brewers are the team melting down and it looks like the D-Backs aren’t doing much better. I think tonight (probably along with the hurricane) took the remainder of the Astro’s momentum away. It looks like the Sabathia and Sheets combo isn’t getting it done in Miluakee… the Cubs have the division, the momentum, and just need to keep the starters somewhat fresh and gear up for the postseason. I know we all hate Howry, Wuerts, and Cotts… but hell, they’re middle relievers for a reason. Anyone remember the Marmol days as a starter? Kind of like the Ryu hopes and expectations.
I live in Texas, so I only get the WGN games here… we have “Fox Sports Southwest” and get all the Rangers and Astro’s games… the Astro announcer repeatedly mentioned “no-hitter” every inning after the fourth. They then blamed the unfair arrangements, going as far as pointing out one of the announcers wearing mismatched shoes because of no light in his house because of the hurricane.
Always a damn excuse! Z did a great job tonight!
September 15, 2008 at 12:56 am
The game was only show on WGN Channel 9 in Chicago because ESPN has some stupid rule about them showing the only nationally televised game. I know the FSN in Houston showed the game too but only the local markets got it. What a shame.
I will never forget the day that Carlos Zambrano threw a no-hitter.
September 15, 2008 at 1:41 am
Yes, I was at the game! The tenth row in the lower right field bleachers. The atmosphere was beyond electric. I was on my feet from the Soriano game lead-off homer, to the 3rd inning rally, in which Lee decided not to hit into a double play, to the final swing and miss strike 3! My voice is gone from the screaming along with the other fans who were sounding off on the way out. The parking lot was filled with cheering and incessant honking long after the big blue mob on the mound had dispersed. I was 0-4 going to Cubs games before tonight. I am now 1-4. What a way to experience my first win, a big Z no-no!!!
GO CUBS GO!!
September 15, 2008 at 2:16 am
Years from now, when this is remembered, the context of this game might get lost. … The Astros came into this game white hot, winning 13 of their last 14. The Cubs really needed to win at least one of these two games to knock them off stride a little and trim two off their elimination number with this vital head-to-head meeting.
The Cubs still weren’t out of the woods from their swoon. I mean they beat the Cardinals twice, but another string of losses … The Cubs had won just three of their last 11 coming into the game.
The offense had looked moribund, and that’s what had me excited early when the Cubs scored four runs with two outs in the third. I was just hoping they would hold on to that five-run lead.
Also, Z hadn’t pitched in 12 days, and he had the tendinitis and a cortisone shot. You didn’t know what shape he would be in or how he would pitch. AND there was the whole waiting for two days while MLB fiddle farted around then moved the game to Miller Park.
I think all that together with Z’s outstanding performance made this one of the best moments in Cubs history.

I just can’t get enough of this.
September 15, 2008 at 4:39 am
I found that one a few hours ago as well. It’s a really good video that I’ve watched a few times already myself. … Another little trivia tidbit: With this no-hitter (and complete game), the Cubs get their first CG of the year and avoid not having at least one CG for the first time in team history.
September 15, 2008 at 4:42 am
I should have double-checked this. Dempster had a complete game this year.
September 15, 2008 at 5:51 am
cubsfaninar The only thing I am going to be excited about is the 11th victory in the postseason
September 15, 2008 at 10:37 am
Nothing more to say than that was unbelievable what Z did last night. I couldn’t help but to get chills watching them celebrate on the mound. Very similar to what a world series celebration is! Maybe he needs them cortisone shots more often! The only thing that sucked is what everybody else has been saying. The game being blacked out. I was flipping all over last night hoping I could find the game all the while I was getting texts from my brother updating me on what was going on. I got to see the last inning because of ESPN cutting in but really do wish I could have gotten to watch that game. Also good to see Lee htting the ball to right again and not pulling off the ball all the time.
September 15, 2008 at 10:59 am
Robert
Wow that is amazing that you can’t be excited about a no hitter. To each his own I guess, but there are few things in baseball that could get a person excited, and I think that a no hitter is one of them. I have been watching baseball for 25+ years and have NEVER seen a no hitter pitched so that was definitely exciting to me. I agree it won’t be anything like the excitement of that 11th postseason win, but all in all that is a game I will never forget. That was one of the few times I was glad I lived in Arkansas because thanks to regional television I actually witnessed a beautiful event.
September 15, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Ok what the fuck Lily? Where have you been hiding this gem all year? Now the Cubs have 15 straight innings without giving up a base hit. Unreal!!
In other news, Ned Yost has been canned. Should have happened to Dusty Baker at the end of the 2004 collapse.
I will make a prediction for the end of this month now. 97-65 with a division championship if the 162nd game needs to be played.
September 15, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Oh well, can’t no-hit two in a row, but no matter. 4 wins in a row now, and the offense has woken up. I read on Brewers.com that they have pretty much conceded the division to the Cubs, so they will be a hungry team battling for the Wildcard this week. Hopefully our other ace Ryan Dempster can keep the pitching as hot as it has been these last two games. Only 5-7 for the month, not too bad. Not great, but not bad as they appear to be turning it around. Just some cautious optimism here.
GO CUBS GO!!!
September 15, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Nice job, Lilly. A sweep of the Brewers eliminates them from the division.
Elimination Numbers (for Cubs to win division)
Milwaukee – 6
Houston – 4
St. Louis – 2
September 15, 2008 at 5:35 pm
“some cautious optimism here.”
For success in the playoffs, and a possible pennant & World Series, most definitely caution. But for the division? Nah, they have that wrapped up now. Astros needed at least one of these games, and didn’t get it. Brewers needed to win 3 out of 4 against the Phils, and didn’t get it. So, no one is hot enough to catch the Cubs now. Plus, it seems as if they have gotten the losing streak out of their system. Good, they need to turn up the heat and finish strong going into the playoffs. Home field advantage is important, since the Cubs have excelled at home.
By the way, where has this kind of performance from Zambrano and Lilly been all this season? Well, that’s baseball, unpredictable.
Let’s just hope that’s a sign of things to come and not just a one time flash in the pan.
September 15, 2008 at 5:56 pm
Oh, I would like to comment on what cubsfaninAr said:
“Robert
Wow that is amazing that you can’t be excited about a no hitter.”
I don’t agree with Robert, I think there are things to get excited about, and this no hitter is one of them, Sammy’s home run chase of McGuire was another. However, as a Cub fan for 45 years, Robert is right about one thing; they have to prove it on the field before they get respect from us on this site. They want respect? Then earn it!
FroDog has provided a haven for skeptical Cub fans like us. Those who can’t stand the skepticism all post at BleedCubbieBlue. That’s fine, they have their blog and we have ours.
The difference in the two blogs? We believe that winning pennants and World Series earns the Cubs the right to be taken seriously. BCB, on the other hand, believes that simply because they are the Chicago Cub earns them the right to be taken seriously. To me, that is the difference in the two. Anyone else want to chime in with their opinion on this please do.
September 15, 2008 at 6:10 pm
In today’s news:
“Barring injury or another scheduling glitch, that makes the playoff rotation: Zambrano, Lilly and Dempster, with either Marquis or Harden as the final one in a probable four-man rotation.”
I would prefer Harden in the top three, not Lilly. Another thing, why is Lou even considering Marquis over Harden? Is he totally insane???? That’s like saying Howry could get the nod over Marmol. Come on Lou, give us a chance here!! Play your best!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 15, 2008 at 6:22 pm
erniesarmy
I agree 100% that this is an excellent site that true Cubs fans can come to and vent their frustrations over the Cubs. This is definitely not a sheeple site. With that being said, if Robert doesn’t get excited over a no hitter because the Cubs haven’t won a World Series since 1908 I just don’t understand that. I am also in total agreement until the Cubs win 11 post-season games the season as a whole was a failure. Does the no hitter change anything? Not really, it goes down as a W in that column but it sure was exciting to watch.
September 15, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Has anybody here heard what that moron John Kruk said on the Scott VanPelt show today?
He said they should have played the games in Houston! He said that if they couldn’t play the games there this weekend, then play them in Houston at the end of the season!!!! Can you imagine? 3 games played, then the playoffs?
Basically, ESPN is whining about the Milwaukee venue. Saying it was unfair, the players had to leave their families, the site was not neutral because of all the Cub fans, etc., etc. boo hoo.
Listen jerks, if the Astros were as good, and as hot, as everybody thought they were they could have played the games in Wrigley and the Astros would still have won (which they did earlier this month, 3 straight). They lost! Get over it! The better team won…twice!! The field had nothing to do with it.
September 15, 2008 at 6:28 pm
“This is definitely not a sheeple site. With that being said, if Robert doesn’t get excited over a no hitter because the Cubs haven’t won a World Series since 1908 I just don’t understand that.”
Like I said, I agree with you, but I understand Robert’s take.
September 15, 2008 at 6:43 pm
The reason for my post is cause I have not been on bleen cubbie blue but I have been on cbs sportsline.com and posted that I dont give a damn about 100 wins I dont give a care about magic numbers all I care about is 11 victories in the postseason I will admit the no hitter was exciting. And I have been criticized buy it on that site. If you dont have your head up hendry and pinellas ass you are criticized.I want to post the world series flag on my fathers grave. I have lived through 84 89 09 03 04 and 07 I just am not getting excited till the 11th victory of the post season…ps if marquis pitches how he has lately I would love to see him on the postseason as a middle releiver in stead of blowjob bob howry or neal sucking cocks get it we have neal and bob in our bullpen cant figure out if thats there name or just what they do cause they blow
September 15, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Maybe if Ned Yost had his priorities straight, the Brewers would be winning and he’d still have his job. Whining over the “stolen no-hitter” was unbelievable. I commend the Brewers organization for canning him now…too bad the Cubs didn’t do the same with Dusty at the end of 2004….or 2005…or beginning of 2006.
September 15, 2008 at 6:48 pm
Let me describe why I am not getting to excited about this season
I am a Pittsburgh Steelers fan In my life time 5 Superbowl titles and 6 apperances in the super bowl
I am an edmonton Oiler fan 5 stanley cup titles two time runners up
I am a cub fan
September 15, 2008 at 6:48 pm
All of us here agree on one thing: Anything short of a World Championship is a failure.
That is how it should be in every sport and on every level. What is the point of having a season if you do not want to win a championship? Exactly.
The no-hitter should be enjoyed by all of us. It is something that does not happen very often. It does go down as another win in the column and I understand that it meant nothing as far as the playoffs is concerned but it was unbelievable.
September 15, 2008 at 6:48 pm
genre what about not even hiring him after all they turned down Ron Gardenhire for douchebag
September 15, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Forgot one more thing: Let’s sweep the Brewers and wrap up the division title by Thursday afternoon.
September 15, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Genrebuster:
IMO Dusty should have been canned immediately after he started using Carey and Stoney as an excuse for losing. That told you all you needed to know about his leadership ability, or better yet, lack of same.
September 15, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Will the real Big Z and Lilly please stand up? And if it’s the guys that pitched the last 2 games, please remain standing until the end of October.
If starting pitchers remain focused, then things are looking up. The bats seem to be warming up again, finally.
I did NOT expect such a beatdown of the pesky Astros, two days in a row. I would have enjoyed watching either/both, still GREAT to read about it.
Harden has been great with the Cubs and I hope he is healthy….to me, he has been the ace of the staff…but Zambrano and Lilly sure pitched like true aces these last two games.
That’s a tough act to follow!
In a close game, the bullpen still concerns me.
September 15, 2008 at 6:56 pm
” Let’s sweep the Brewers and wrap up the division title by Thursday afternoon.”
That will be very tough, Fro. I understand Dale Sveum is exactly the opposite of Yost, calm and cool. I remember when Steinbrenner replaced Billy Martin (hot head) in the middle of the 1977 season with Bob Lemon (cool and calm), and the Yanks went on to win the W.S.
Most teams come out, after a managerial change, with a new attitude. Most of the time that attitude means a string of wins, and they’ve got Sabathia and Sheets for the first two games. For me, I hope the Cubs win one of these three. A sweep would be amazing – even championshiplike. 🙂
September 15, 2008 at 7:01 pm
ernie and robert. Regarding the toothpick chomping idiot, I agree 100%. The minute you start blaming announcers for losing, it’s obvious you have lost touch with reality…and control of a team. Baker was PATHETIC.
But this is 2008…and for now, the Cubs are alive…play ball!
September 15, 2008 at 7:03 pm
hey Cincinnati…Ned Yost is available!
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
September 15, 2008 at 7:04 pm
If you thought Kruk was bad you should have heard the Astros announcers. They whined every inning since the game began last night. How this was a travesty that the Astros had to play two games in Milwaukee with 99% Cubs fans…blah blah blah. My questions to all the Astros players is why did you stay in Houston. You have the financial resources to get out of town, before Ike came to Houston. I don’t feel sorry for you that you stayed and had to catch a plane yesterday morning and had trouble doing so because your city was demolished. You are no different the the 4 million other people that this storm affected. I am truly sorry if you lost your houses, pools, and whatever else millions of dollars can buy you, but you chose to stay which was definitely not the smartest thing to do. Does it really matter where the games are played because if we would have swept them in Tampa, the excuse would have been that Lou Pinella managed there and he knew all of the nuances of the park. ESPN, Astros, and Fox Sports need to realize that the Astros ran into a buzzsaw the last two games, and I don’t think where they played those games would have made a difference.
September 15, 2008 at 7:06 pm
robert, that’s not a bad idea keeping Marquis as a middle reliever instead of “Kneel and Bob”.
September 15, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Uhhh…didn’t the Astros beat up on the Cubs at Wrigley recently?
I thought so.
To borrow a phrase from Fro Dog: “Shut your fucking mouth!”
September 15, 2008 at 7:10 pm
A good team doesn’t cry about where they play, because they know they will win regardless of where they play.
That’s why good teams win on the road, because they’re good.
The Green Bay Packers of the 60’s believed that they should never lose a game. And when they did lose it was because they ran out of time.
That’s the way all great teams think.
September 15, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Al Yellon said this –
“History will be made, now, with virtually every win. Today’s win was the 90th of the year — that makes this team only the fifth since 1945 to win that many (1969, 1984, 1989, 1998 were the others, and it took a 163rd game, the wild card tiebreaker, in 1998 to get that 90th win). You are living the most remarkable Cubs season in … well, a hundred years. Savor every moment.”
UHHHH…Hey Al, the Cubs failed to even win the pennant in all those years except 1945. In 1945 they failed to win the W.S. So, what again makes this such a “remarkable Cub season” in 100 years?
Can somebody please give Al a hand getting his head out of his asssssss!!
September 15, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Dear Al: The most remarkable Cubs season in my lifetime was 2006. Why, you ask? Because Dusty Baker managed to retain his job until the bitter end. Remarkable…and PATHETIC!

genre I realized the douchebag was gone the 2nd game of last year when dempster was our closer he gave up a walk and was 2-0 on the next batter and lou comes out and gave him the death look and said it fucking cold I want to go home throw a fucking strike
September 16, 2008 at 1:52 am
Hey, anyone know what the Darth Vader icon in the Cubs.com schedule is all about for tonight’s game? I checked the promotions schedule and the promotion is a random chance to win a skateboard signed by some dude who is NOT DARTH VADER! WTF?
Derrek Lee has had some big rbi’s the past two days (and not on ground balls). This would be a nice trend. Though I am skeptical.
September 16, 2008 at 7:47 am
There is a videogame coming out for most systems today called STAR WARS: FORCE UNLEASHED. Apparently it is a sponsor of MLB and there are promotions about it at games.
September 16, 2008 at 8:17 am
Al Yellon is one of the biggest douchebags walking the planet. This dumb bastard should not be allowed to breathe the same air as I do. Stupid fucking asshole.
September 16, 2008 at 10:36 am
The series with the Brewers should be good because the Brewers have had a shakeup. We’ll see whether the Brewers respond and how the Cubs handle what is almost a lock for the division title. In the standings, it seems the Brewers have a WC berth to gain and the Cubs little to lose.
After reading about Ned Yost being canned yesterday, I think the Brewers brass didn’t like what he did in Philly over the weekend and so they decided the team was better-off without him for the rest of the season. (That’s what the Cubs should have done in 06’, but Dusty’s coaching staff didn’t have much going for it. So, the Cubs had more of an issue of who would have taken over for the rest of the season. Also, the top Brewer owner made Yost go away…while McFail and the Tribune Co…) Once players started acting-up and the fans blamed him for the swoons, it was only a matter of time for Yost. They say Yost kept sending poor performers out to play. Don’t follow them enough to know what he had to work with, so I’m not so sure that’s as much like Dusty, and as unlike Lou, as it sounds.
The Cubs did this season what I had wished for the last several; they started the season well. Along with a good manager, a good start helps get through the slumps and injuries along the way. The team established itself as a good team even though the easier schedule at the beginning of the year helped that along.
September 16, 2008 at 12:28 pm
from what I’ve read Sveum is a low-key guy. Perhaps his style will take a bit for the Brewers to catch on to. I would think for a win NOW approach, they would have taken a more emotional, fiery guy. Apparently, Yost was already like that so they went opposite. I always hated Yost, glad to see him go.
September 16, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Those 2 games by Zambrano and lilly were awesome!! I found one thing that I didn’t like about Z’s no hitter. I wanted sooooo badly, when they mobbed him, to see that someone had “accidentally” fucked up Howry and Cedeno’s knees during the celebration in the scrum. Opportunity wasted!! Damn it to hell…………. Great games.
September 16, 2008 at 2:00 pm
I see that Woody hasn’t been in a game in 5 days again. Remember what happened the last time that occured? You got it… he was putrid and blew the game! Although I think he sucks as a closer, I don’t understand why they don’t put him in to get some work and stay sharp? If that’s at all possible with him (I doubt it). They got blown out a couple of days before he blew his save. Why didn’t they put him in then? or yesterdays game? Just watch when he comes into the next game. Cubs up 4-2… Wood walks the first batter (or hits him..)…. then gives up a hit…. you know the rest……. Fucker!
September 16, 2008 at 8:03 pm
I have not been on bleed cubbie blue.com but that al yellon sounds like half the ass clowns on cbs sportsline.com.. he and them may talk about a miracle of 90 wins how far did the mariners go when they won 116 not far as i said i dont care about a division title i dont care about 90 wins all i care is about is 11 wins in the post season… And I think everyone on this site agrees with me
September 17, 2008 at 9:27 am
Agreed Robert!! But what’s wrong with getting all of it. We fucking deserve it after all these years. I want the 100 wins, Manager of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Cy Young winner, MVP & a no hitter thrown too along with that 11 wins and a World Series Championship. I’m being greedy, but when you’ve been starved forever what wrong with getting a plate at the buffet line. Give me all of that shit.
