Go away Kerry Wood. GO AWAY. You were cool when I was in 7th grade. I am older now and have grown tired of your shitty pitching you piece of shit.

  2. cubsfaninAr's avatar cubsfaninAr Says:

Agreed Fro Kingsford needs to find a new team. That crap gets old way too quickly. The Cubs did win tonight but where are the easy one two three innings when you are facing the bottom of a lineup. Finally they tacked on a few runs late and won a game. Awesome to see because if this team goes deep in the playoffs they have to win games like these. What I do love about the whole scenario, is that the Brewers picked up CC Sabathia so they could catch the Cubs. The only two games that the Brewers have lost with him pitching is against the Cubs. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! I hate the Brewers!!!!

  3. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

    First the Good –

    Lee, Ramirez, and Soriano 7 for 12, 4 rbi’s

    Dempster 6 inn. 7 h. 2 er 9 so.

    Cut magic number to 4

    Now The Bad –

    Soto, DeRosa, and Johnson 1 for 10 4 so’s 8 lob

Howry and Cotts in the game!

Wood 1 inn. 26 pitches 3 hits 1 run 2 lob at final out

Summary: How much longer is Lou going to keep “Kingsford” in the closers role? He cannot get a 1-2-3 inning! How will that work in the playoffs? This is a real problem for the Cubs and they don’t have a solution. Lou won’t put Marmol in that spot, and he’s the only one who could do it. Gaudin looks like he is done for the season. The Cub bullpen is a serious problem. They cannot win a pennant with this bullpen, unless something changes.

  4. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

The problem, Fro, is that the Cubs have no one else.

Piniella is too stubborn to put Marmol in that spot, so what else can you do?

Unless Rothschild, or Piniella, can get this guy fixed before the playoffs, I don’t see this team winning a pennant.

YOU MUST HAVE A RELIABLE CLOSER TO WIN A PENNANT! Kerry Wood is NOT a reliable closer!!!!!!!!

  5. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

jesus christ, runner on first with two out and Kingsford starts a blaze that nearly can’t be contained. If the Cubs are going to do well in the playoffs they are going to need an outstanding run of their starting pitching-like the White Sox had in 2005.

Nice clutch hit by Blanco, and a late solo shot by Soriano that meant a lot.

I have a feeling the Cubs are going to sweep this series-but don’t hold me to it (they are still the Cubs until they win it all).

  6. genrebuster's avatar genrebuster Says:

Yes…the bullpen is suspect. Don’t be surprised if it comes back to haunt the Cubs.

Memo to Hendry: IF you still have a job next year…get a legitimate closer, unless you are willing to give Marmol an opportunity.

    What to do with Kingsford?

  7. Fro Dog's avatar Fro Dog Says:

I am aware of that erniesarmy. We have to live and die with this asshole.

Marmol has to stay in the 7th/8th inning role because the Cubs need a pitcher to hold it down in those innings so the closer can actually have a chance shut the door.

  8. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

actually, Howry was acquired for the 8th inning role, before Marmol was even on the big league club-and if THAT FUCK HOWRY did his job, Marmol could be the closer.

  9. genrebuster's avatar genrebuster Says:

I vote Howry OFF the team.

Anybody agree? He’s more of a liability than Kingsford, IMOP.

  10. Fro Dog's avatar Fro Dog Says:

Count me in Genre. Wood and “Brown Spot” Bob are both liabilities.

This also would not have been a problem if Hendry would of acquired another bullpen arm at the trading deadline. I am not saying if a trade was made for another arm that it would help but in this case, it wouldn’t have been a bad idea. Example would be if the reliever who was traded for didn’t work out then you go back to the original plan.

  11. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

“I vote Howry OFF the team.”

You got my vote! Unfortunately, nobody that matters cares what we think.

Why? Why? Why? Did Lou bring this disaster in to pitch in a game like this? Note how quickly Lou came to get him, he knows the guy can’t cut it, but he brings him in regardless!

I DON’T GET IT! Looking forward to the playoffs, if Lou keeps this up he will be responsible for another Cub “wait until next year.”

  12. armycubsfan's avatar armycubsfan Says:

    What I am liking:
Decent to stellar starting pitching over the last 3 games.
At least some of the big-bats getting hot.
5 wins in a row, getting the Cubs September record back up to .500
The Cubs finally running away with the NL Central.
Making CC Sabbathia 0-1 in 2 starts against the Cubs, and handing him his first loss with the Brewers.

    What I am not liking:
Offense is not as explosive as it has been.
Bullpen is definitely questionable keeping games dangerously interesting.

Anyway, we are in the playoffs regardless, so the focus is those sweet 11 wins. Look for guys to start resting up after the clinch. Number 1 seed in the NL gives the Cubs home-field advantage until the end of the NLCS if and when they make it there.

    GO CUBS GO!!

  13. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

I’d vote Howry off too. But, I’d rather be a dictator and throw that asshole in Gitmo or something.

Not only did Piniella come get Howry’s sorry ass real fast tonight, but Howry got booed off the mound after only facing two batters-one out and one 4 pitch walk. I am encouraged by Piniella coming in to get these pitchers when they come into the game and start walking people. He did it yesterday too with Samardzija-he walked two and got only one out. Even with a 6 run lead, he yanked his ass before it got bad. Problem is-at least in Howry’s case-he is just as likely to give up a home run to the first batter as a walk. That would have changed the game tonight.

  14. ksmc2000's avatar ksmc2000 Says:

Lou needs to fix the fucking bullpen before post-season. Dempster gave it all he had for six innings. We all thought Dempster would tank long ago, but he has pitched stellar all season. His only mistake was a homer from Fatty Fielder.

After the Cubs clinch the division, get Marquis in there for a few 1-2 inning stints in relief. And by no means, put Cotts or Howry on the post-season roster. Marshall could be the situational lefty, and Marquis can fill Howry’s spot. As much as we have hated on Marquis, he deserves a spot in the playoffs. He got the team turned around with his last start in St. Louis.

  15. robert's avatar robert Says:

did anyone see fielders tits shaking as he rounded the bases

  16. armycubsfan's avatar armycubsfan Says:

Marquis has also been winning baseball games as of late, and going into deeper innings. He has basically been what we needed as a 5th starter, and in that department, we are better off.

  17. genrebuster's avatar genrebuster Says:

I agree that Marquis deserves a spot on the playoff roster.

Cotts and Howry? HA HA HA…NOT on “my team”.

Yes, good to see Lou being proactive and yanking these guys quickly when they don’t have it.

  18. Sandberg23's avatar Sandberg23 Says:

I think what is going on here with Howry is it appears that this is try out to see if he makes that playoff roster. Because I have no freaking idea why in the hell he would have been in the game last night. MAtter of fact he has been in the last two games. There is no way in hell this guy gets on the playoff roster. NO WAY!! Put Marquis in his spot, Gaudin if he can come back or hell even Guzman. Wood is Kingsford. Howry is the spark that starts the California forest fires!

  19. chucky's avatar chucky Says:

    Genre

You asked earlier “What to do with Kingsford”. I say hose him with lighter fluid, lite a match, and get some marshmallows.

  20. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

Not crazy about Marquis on the post season roster, but I’d give it to him over Cotts and Howry (Sparky?).

  21. genrebuster's avatar genrebuster Says:

“Sparky & Kingsford”…great nicknames, risky pitching tandem.

Second City should grab that concept and run with it.

  22. genrebuster's avatar genrebuster Says:

…or maybe just a public service announcement/commercial…with Smokey the Bear walking out to the mound at Wrigley…and slapping the shit out of Sparky and/or Kingsford.

I’d pay a few bucks to see that.

  23. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

Or maybe, Smokey would say “Only LOU can prevent forest fires” and Lou would grab Smokey’s shovel and knock the shit out of Sparky and Kingsford and bury them in the dirt under the mound (you always cover your incendiaries with dirt to prevent the fire from spreading). Such shitty pitching gives us so many possibilities.

  24. genrebuster's avatar genrebuster Says:

HELL YES, nemo. That is the punchline, EXCELLENT!

  25. brainfuckers's avatar brainfuckers Says:

I like Marmol, but in the closers role? There isn’t anyone else to put there…. Yeah, I guess…..I admit, he would be better that Wood, but he’s given up 36 hits this year and 10 of them have been homers!!! WOW If Howry is on that play-off roster, i’m going to kill myself. I’m convinced that if each of us in here faced him, we’d bat .900 against him. He’d strike out sandberg23 for sure. Ha! Howry must give Lou good head and swallow every fucking drop…. I can’t think of any other reason why in the hell they keep throwing that piece of shit out there and apparently he will be on the play-off roster….FFFFUUUCCCCKKKK.

  35. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

Soriano, Fontenot, and Lee – 1 for 11, and 5 strikeouts!

Way to set the table fellas.

    Marquis – 5.1 inn., 3 runs, 5 BB, 3 S0

Not quite playoff worthy ole buddy.

    Guzman – 0.2 inn., 3 hits, 3 runs, 1 SO

Why did we bring him up again?

Hart, Marshall, and Wells – 3 inn., 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks

Now that’s playoff caliber. Good job fellas.

Is the Cub offense back in the swing of things? Uh…not quite!

Don’t offer any damn contract extensions until this guy proves he can win in the postseason. What is with this organization and contract extensions? Let the person prove they’re worthy of the extension before you throw money at them. This is how they got into the mess with Dusty.

  38. jf's avatar jf Says:

The Cubs faced Brewer relief pitchers for 7 innings. I would have thought they could score more than 2 runs off the Brewer bullpen. Apparently they couldn’t.

  39. ksmc2000's avatar ksmc2000 Says:

Another move by Piniella that has you scratching your head. Bad time to experiment with Guzman when the game was still within reach. Lock up the fucking division and home field before you decide to tinker.

  41. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

awful start by Harden-better get his act together fast or we’re looking at another 100 pitches in 5 innings outing. or worse.

  42. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

29 pitches to get one out-PATHETIC!

  43. chucky's avatar chucky Says:

Good call Nemo. I have it on Gameday on my computer. Top of the 5th, 1 out , 103 pitches. Pathetic indeed.

  44. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

Harden is done, now who does Lou bring in to pitch? This is a key game.

Listening to the game on WGN radio. I loved Ron Santo as a player, he was one of my all-time favorites, but I could bring in somebody off the streets that could do better than him. All he does is groan and say, “oh sheesh.”

  45. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

    MEMO to LEN KASPER:

Rich Harden finds ways to get INTO jams, which is the only reason he needs to get out of them.

If he could just get the “get out of it” part right, without the “getting into it”, he could save A TON of pitches and maybe get into the 7th or 8th inning. An 8 pitch walk to the pitcher?! C’mon!!!! You’ve got to focus better than that. NO WAY Harden throws 115 pitches if we were in the 7th inning or later. He really is his own worst enemy.

  46. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

Theriot blows an absolutely easy ground ball.

I can see this happening in a crucial spot in the playoffs, just like all the other Cub choke jobs in the past.

We are weak up the middle, that will cost us later, believe it!

  47. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

Santo: “Gee whiz”…”Oh, man”…”Gosh”…”Boy oh Boy” What a color commentator!!

Weak bullpen, weak offense, weak up the middle = one and done in the playoffs!

  48. genrebuster's avatar genrebuster Says:

Walks and errors…sooner or later they will get you!

Maybe these guys make too much money…

    HA HA HA HA HA

    barf.

  49. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

Samardjiza’s a nice pitcher for our future, but he is not ready for prime time, and he is definitely not ready for a crucial game in a pennant run.

Lou is showing his weakness as a manager in his bullpen selections. Kids aren’t ready for pennant runs Lou.

  50. genrebuster's avatar genrebuster Says:

I think some of these Cubs pitchers still believe Dusty! Amazing.

  51. chucky's avatar chucky Says:

Dick Hardon isn’t exactly making me confident either.

  52. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

Samardzija is not ready for prime time.

Brenly made a great point-Harden has a hard time going 5 innings or more. For the playoffs, make sure that Marshall is rested and ready to go to backup Harden on days like today. Not only can Marshall pitch long relief, but teams generally stack their lineups with lefties against Harden-bringing in the lefty Marshall would throw off the other teams lineup (if you believe in the lefty/righty thing).

Such a plan would save us from the bullshit of bringing in Samardzija and RANDY Wells in a tight game like today. RANDY WELLS?! The magic number is 4 not Zero!! It really is that bad in middle relief.

  53. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

holy cow, Ernie, did not see your prime time comment before making mine. I like your thinking 😉

  54. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

    D LEE BOUNCES INTO DP!!!!!

Like I say, the Cubs are the clowns of baseball.

  55. chucky's avatar chucky Says:

And DP Lee is up to his tricks again. GOD-FUCKING-DAMMIT!!!!!!

  56. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

    DP Lee strikes again!!

Games like today are why I almost always play the game back on DVR rather than watch the game live. What a waste of time!

  57. Fro Dog's avatar Fro Dog Says:

Who said we were making the playoffs?

  58. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

ESPN says we have a 99.8% chance to win the division. Needless to say, it would be a collapse of epic proportions. Of course Prior and Wood lost back-to-back at home, so we know the Cubs are capable of it.

What happened to the killer instinct that we had against Houston? When Sheets went out early yesterday, the Cubs should have smelled blood, not taken the rest of the evening off.

  59. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

Cubs behind 5-2 going into the 7th.

Who really believes this team can come back to win this game?

    I thought so.

Cubs lose two in a row and fail to bring the magic number to 2 or 0.

Pressure will begin to build again if they lose 2 of 3 to the Cards this weekend, because they begin a road-trip against the Mets and Brewers, both who are fighting for playoff spots.

I hate to say this, but they could still blow this.

  60. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

Q- Why are the Cubs considered environmentalists?

A- They believe all the players on the other team should walk.

  61. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

You know, if the Cubs want to go all out to win a fucking game-how about go all out against the Brewers?! Putting Randy Wells out there, one day removed from his major league debut, made no sense. Two wins and it would have been over. Now they are going to have to find 4 wins and they are playing like shit again.

  62. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

Michael Wuertz is a fucking idiot!!!!

  63. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

I don’t know Nemo, what difference will it make if/when they do win the division?

The only one in their bullpen that you can depend on is Marmol, and even he’s shaky.

Their offense is putrid, once they get behind they’re dead.

Their defense, especially up the middle, is weak.

The Cubs, other than good starting pitching, have all the same issues those other Cubs choker teams had in the past, and believe me I know, I’ve lived through them all.
So, if you, or anybody else on this board, has any insights into how this team can go anywhere in the playoffs, please convince me.

I mean it, I can’t see them getting by the Dodgers, Phillies, Mets, or even the Brewers in the first round.

  64. Fro Dog's avatar Fro Dog Says:

Randy Wells did well after that walk so I am not pissed at him. Dickhead DeRosa with the error and Samardjia still giving up hits after that was the problem. Don’t forget about the offense though. They are on vacation again.

Fuck Neal Cottsucker, fuck Genital Wuertz, fuck “Brown Spot” Bob, fuck Kerry Wood, Fuck Mark “Double-Play” DeRosa, Fuck Derrek “6-4-“Lee, fuck Jason Marquis, fuck Kos-K Fukudome.

    WHO ELSE AM I MISSING?

  65. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

what difference will what make, Ernie? not sure what you mean.

  66. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

I’m not mad at Randy Wells, but he certainly should never have been put in that situation and it just goes to show they have no clue what to do with the bullpen before it’s time for Marmol and Kingsford. Of course, one of the reasons they have no clue is that the bullpen all sucks-or hasn’t had the chance to develop to be good yet.

  67. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

if you are gonna tie it up, you better fucking win it!

  68. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

“what difference will what make, Ernie? not sure what you mean.”

Nemo, what I meant was what difference will it make to get into the playoffs and then be one and done. Losing now may save us the pain of losing later.

Just as I turn off the radio and go do something else, the Cubs make me look bad by doing exactly what I never believed they could do, come back in the 9th.

If they can go on to win this, forget what I said previously, this team is special.

I AM SHOCKED! There was no way they come back. Boy am I glad they showed me what an ass I am.

  69. chucky's avatar chucky Says:

    FUCK OFF KERRY WOOD!!!!

  70. chucky's avatar chucky Says:

  71. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

    Santo: “How big was that!”

I’m with ya Ronnie! That was huggggggeeeeee!!!!!!!

    It did the following:

    1) Magic number reduced to 2

    2) Best comeback all season – Down 6 – 2 with two outs in bottom of 9th.

    3) Derrek Lee with the most clutch hit this season.

THE CUBS ARE BACK!!!! The “CUBBIES” are where they belong, in the toilet.

  72. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

I must say, with this win the Cubs just put themselves back in as favorites to win the NL pennant.

This win was so “unCublike” that it makes me want to believe again, like I believed before the 1969 collapse.

I know, I know, still some games to play, but you guys who know the Cubs know this was not business as usual.

  73. Fro Dog's avatar Fro Dog Says:

I thought this game was over after the bullpen and DeRosa pissed the lead away. I was wrong though. In the past, this was the case. This year, it is different sometimes which is shocking.

  74. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

Glad I didn’t see the top of the 12th. Well, the Cubs have come back a couple times in the 9th this year, only to lose in extra innings (and drain their bullpen). So, finishing the deal today was improvement. Made much more sense to decide to win this game, rather than have to win two later. I’m no longer at all nervous about making the playoffs, but I won’t have confidence that they will advance until they advance.

  75. genrebuster's avatar genrebuster Says:

Logged of at Brewers 5, Cubs 2.

Just logged back on and read everybody’s latest comments…Damn! I missed it.

Really hope Cubs maintain the intensity, the time to relax is when the World Series is over..

  76. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

Although I said the Cubs are playing unlike the loser Cubbies of the past, that doesn’t mean I think they will win it all this year. What it means is I think they have a legitimate chance to win it all this year. That’s all.

Things that still are troublesome is –

    1) That bullpen. Woody is still not a reliable closer, and the middle arms don’t frighten anybody, although Wells is looking pretty good in his few appearances. Hopefully Gaudin will be available, they need him badly.

    2) The offense. Lee came through for us huge today, but he was only 1 for 6. Theriot went 0 for 6. I want to see Lee start hitting something other than singles, and Theriot to just start hitting, before I say they’re out of their slump.

    3) Defense. DeRosa’s error is the kind of thing that destroyed us in 1984 and 2003. That middle infield defense is shaky.

    4) Lou Piniella. He has made some very questionable decisions lately regarding that bullpen . It is like he flips a coin to see who pitches, rather than uses his brain. He worries me, he has been embarrassingly out managed in recent playoff games.

None of these things are enough to give up hope, but like Genre said, “the time to relax is when the World Series is over,” and, hopefully, ours.

  77. armycubsfan's avatar armycubsfan Says:

Once Ramirez was on second with two down in the 9th inning, I was like “they gonna tie it right here. Sure enough a few more hits, and I basically call Geovanny Soto’s 3 run bomb that ties the game. Yeah Kerry Wood scares us but his striking out the side in the 11th is what I love to see from him. He made Prince Fielder look like a fat floppy-breasted pathetic sack of goo going down swinging like that, way to go!

One more win and one more Brewers loss and it won’t matter who Lou plays for the final week and a half.

We should get 96 or 97 wins once this thing is over.

    GO CUBS GO!!

  80. AndersonvileAl's avatar AndersonvileAl Says:

The funny thing is I was having trouble coming up filling out my top 5 list of highlights from this season. The last week has given me three big highlights.
    My list so far is:
    1. Zambrano no-hitter
    2. Sweep in Miller Park
    3. Soto’s HR today
    4. The eight-run rally against the Rockies
    5. Kingsford freezing the Tub of Love with a nasty hook

  81. robert's avatar robert Says:

is it just me or does watching geovanny soto play every day make you realize just how pathetic michael barett realy was

  82. erniesarmy's avatar erniesarmy Says:

I hear ya, AnderssonvilleAl, the only people I knew that called the Cubs “Cubbies” were fans of our opponents.

Whenever I went to Dodger Stadium the fans there would chant, “Cubbies, Cubbies, Cubbies” like a school bully picking on a little kid. That’s why I hate it it makes the team look like pathetic little losers. And yet, when they sing Take Me Out To The Ballgame at Wrigley, they sing, “let’s root, root, root for the “Cubbies..”

It’s as if they like to be mocked. I guess Cub sites like BCB do echo the feelings of the majority of Cub fans. Sad.

  83. Nemo's avatar Nemo Says:

Maybe that’s the origin of “Cubbies” -the 7th inning stretch. Cubs has only one syllable and “Cub-bies” has two and replaces the two syllable “home team.” I would just stretch out Cubs to “Cuh-ubs” myself for the two syllables. But, it just seemed to gradually catch on from there. When I was little, there was no “Cubbie” merchandise. It was “Cub Power” and such. I FUCKING LOATHE CUBBIES.

  84. chucky's avatar chucky Says:

Hence, the absolute need to get rid of that goddamn 7th inning stretch singing bullshit.

  85. Geovanny Soto's avatar Geovanny Soto Says:

Many ballparks have changed the 7th inning stretch since 9/11/01. It is more likely you will sing God Bless America at that time rather than Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Some venues also do both, but there is no guest conductor like at Wrigley. I like the song, and it is a part of tradition to me, but changing Cubbies to Cubs is just perfect. Cubs have a lot of clout, cubbies do not.

D Lee’s hit was very clutch but there was nothing more clutch than Soto’s bomb in the ninth. If there was ever any doubt about him winning rookie of the year he put that to rest for good yesterday. That was big time what he did there. Put that guy in the cleanup spot and leave him there. Move Ramirez to third. Hopefully Samardija can straightened his shit out. If he keeps this up “Sparky” is gonna get on the playoff roster. Brainfuckers “sparky” wouldn’t strike me out. He throws the ball so straight with a magnet on it that attracts wood. all you would have to do is stick the fucking bat out and he would hit it.

BTW, Mike D you can go fuck yourself. You’re kind is not wanted here. Baaa…baaa…baaa….baaa.. I hear them calling you at BCB! Or hell maybe you can wake up you’re brother Jimmy D up over there and he can finally update his blog from July!

I like “Geovanny Soto” just fine.

Perhaps when Mike D. grows up, he and his posts will become more interesting and entertaining. Perhaps not. In the meantime, lick lick lick.

    RIP “Cubbies”. You are weak.

    Bring on the CUBS.

7th inning stretch should have been canned when Harry left us. Wrigley Stadium would be better off without it.

Too bad “jimmy d” from the old site hasn’t re-appeared here. He contributed some wondrous, beautifully scathing posts. Bring it on!
