The Bears had eight draft picks this year after some trades were made. While I would have preferred the first two picks to be on offensive linemen, Ryan Poles drafted two of them out of the eight. And let’s have some prayer that the cornerback they took in Zah Frazier will replace that douche Tyrique Stevenson.
As I’ve said many times over the years, the purpose of a draft is to have these players contribute immediately. However, the history of this franchise has proven that a vast majority of these picks become busts. Let’s see if that changes this time around.
Round 1: No. 10 – Colston Loveland, TE, Michigan
Round 2: No. 39 (from CAR) – Luther Burden III, WR, Missouri
Round 2: No. 56 (from MIN via HOU & BUF) – Ozzy Trapilo, T, Boston College
Round 2: No. 62 (from BUF) – Shemar Turner, DT, Texas A&M
Round 4: No. 132 (from BUF) – Ruben Hyppolite II, LB, Maryland
Round 5: No. 169 (Compensatory, from BUF) – Zah Frazier, CB, Texas-San Antonio
Round 6: No. 195 (from PIT via LAR) – Luke Newman, G, Michigan State
Round 7: No. 233 (from CIN) – Kyle Monangai, RB, Rutgers

Loveland and Burden will probably make the starting offense and these two picks have coach Johnson’s name on them for sure. Loveland should pair well with Kmet in Johnson’s two-TE set which he likes to use a lot. Burden should be an effective slot receiver and he is drawing comps to Amon-Ra St. Brown. It sure looks like Johnson will be running the offense like he did in Detroit, at least personnel-wise.
I’m not sure about the running back, Monangai. I would have drafted an RB higher, there were other good ones on the board besides Jeanty when the Bears turns came up, so perhaps Monangai is a depth piece and coach Johnson is happy with a Swift/Johnson tandem. However, rumor has it that the Browns are letting Nick Chubb hit free agency after drafting two RBs and an NFC north team is potentially going to sign him, could it be the Bears? He’s a big time weapon if healthy, with ‘healthy’ being the operative word here.
The new OT Ozzy Trapilo is known to be better on the right side rather than the left while Darnell Wright is able to play both sides. Wright moves to the left tackle side and Trapilo comes in at right tackle. And that’s the offense.
Poles probably should have drafted higher on defense, especially the D-line. Not sure if enough was done on the D-line in free agency or the draft, though Shemar Turner seems to be a decent pick. We will see how Dennis Allen coaches them up and designs plays. The goal is more QB pressures and sacks. Last year the Bears defense regressed from their previously top 10 rated performance as the season went on, but injuries were a problem. They also had issues stopping the running game, even if they still were one of the top red zone defenses all season.

I know a bit about Monangai as he had a game against Illinois last year. The Illini rallied late to beat Rutgers. Monangai had 122 yards on 28 carries against a very solid defense.
Yes, I know it’s college. But there is some potential there and getting him in the last round means he comes cheap for the next few years. We shall see what transpires.
Still, many say Poles didn’t do enough early in the draft or free agency to help the defense. We will see if those other defensive picks do end up contributing. If so, this comes at a bargain.

So Fro, I understand you had to sell your car to get your seat in St. Louis. Did you get a good price?

Chuckster!
I don’t know if you’ve read about what TKO has been doing the last couple years. But it’s become absurd what these ticket prices are. They have surged three or four times the amount of what it was two years ago.
I made the sign in jest. But also wanted to make my voice heard that this shit simply cannot continue. It’s become unaffordable for many.

Fro, I know you don’t like politics in our dark corner, but I must warn you, it’s only going to get worse. I’ll leave it at that. You probably don’t want to say it here, but I am curious as to how much your ticket cost.
They Bears schedule comes out this week. They already announced 2 games. They play Philadelphia on November 28 (Black Friday) and then they host the Packers on December 20, which s a Saturday. Are you going to post something about it? I’m sure the idiot schedulers will fuck over the players by scheduling games too close together.
Thoughts?
