Bears hire the combination of John Shoop, Terry Shea and Ron Turner to be the new offensive coordinator.

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Bears have hired Mike Martz to be their offensive coordinator.

Just another guy who sucks at play calling and that is friends with Lovie.

I know Boers and Bernstein can’t stand him and his ego-they were ripping him all afternoon!

Fro, Don’t know what to think of the hire. But look at it this way. All these bums are prob. gonna get fired anyway come next year as is. I don’t have a big prob. with it cause nobody was out there anyway. If it wasn’t Martz it was going to be a guy with no o-coordinator experience. I’m with holding judgement as of now cause I want to see what they do in free agency first. I hope this means the Bears get another lineman and Wide out for this offense. You never know. Martz has done some good things in his career, he has helped make a lot of qb’s have good seasons under him.

Fro I agree with you this is a bad hire I mean what has martz done since Marshall Faulk retired not a damn thing

And I’m not the least bit surprised.

Martz also turned Kitna into a 4,000 yard passer-twice. Lions started out 6-2 before they collapsed in 2007. They fired Martz (who was in dispute with the O Line Coach). They promptly went 0-16 the next season. Martz didn’t do much in SF, though.

But, seriously I think some of you guys will criticize the team no matter what they do. Martz was the architect of the greatest show on turf and clearly has a lot of talent. This was the best guy available with proven success. The Bears need someone to work with Cutler as they aren’t about to eat that contract either. What more do you want? Is he arrogant? Probably. Is this nepotism? Sure. A big part of it is payback to Martz for hiring Smith as his defensive coordinator-a man who went on to coach a super bowl team. Is he washed up? Maybe. Who knows, but he will be gone in a year if the offense doesn’t improve (along with Smith). I mean, guys, most of the other candidates for OC were QB coaches-this would be promotion for them. The Bears are not in a “win NOW” mode, not a “learn on the job” mode. If this doesn’t work out, the next GM, coach and OC will probably be very different and they can take the build it from scratch approach and hire young up an coming coaching talent.

Aw, come on, would you expect anything besides nepotism from Chicago-related hirings? 😉

You never know. Maybe things will magically work and the Bears will go undefeated.

Look at it this way: Martz has to be an upgrade over Turner. But the reality is that Angelo has to go and the McCaskeys are idiot owners. Lovie is a bum, too in my book. The Bears are going nowhere for awhile…

But, it could be worse…they could be “The Cubs”. What is it now…102 years without a championship (WS)? Just kidding, I knew the answer.

After reading this article, I think it would be in the Bears best interests to call up Warner and see if he wants to be a QB coach. Let’s face it, no matter who was going to get the job a lot of fans were not going to be happy who got the job because let’s face it. The whole regime should have been shown the door and the organization should have started over but that’s not the case. So I look at it this way. Either this Martz hire is going to work out great and the Bears offense is going to explode and we will see things that we have never seen a Bears offense do before, like actually attack a defense. Or it will be a huge catastrophe and the o will be horrible and the whole caoching staff gets shit canned at the end of the year. It’s really a win-win situation from my point of view as far as I’m concerned. Hell when Martz was visiting down in Tenn. with Cutler. They went to the Gym and Martz had a black board and was drawing up plays for Cutler on the blackboard and Cutler was asking him about certain wide reciever sets. At least it appears as though Martz is gonna try to do everything he can to get his offense installed and getting it to work as soon as he can, I don’t think we could say the same for Turner could we??

  9. genrebuster Says:

No. Turner didn’t have an offense.

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, Kevin Gregg has narrowed his choices down to the Rockies and Marlins.

“I am not overly optimistic, but we have a chance,” Rockies general manager Dan O’Dowd told Renck Monday. “Our job would be as a setup guy.” For Gregg, the chance to be second in line to Huston Street isn’t as promising as the chance to be second in line to Leo Nunez, Renck figures. After signing Melvin Mora, the Rockies had about $2MM to offer for Gregg.
