NCAA Tournament

It’s that time of year again. Leave some of your picks in this thread. I have Cornell beating Temple then Wisconsin (Sorry Mac). Siena beats Purdue and Murray State takes down Vanderbilt.

I also have West Virginia beating Kansas in the championship game.

I was 3 for 3 early today. I had Old Dominion over Notre Dame. Time to head to the bar to watch some of this afternoon’s games. And Fro, I won’t take it personal! I do have the Badgers beating Cornell after whooping up on Wofford tomorrow, but have them losing to Kentucky. Obviously the Badgers are more experienced than Kentucky, and I think Bo Ryan is a better coach than Calipari (who I think is a complete scumbag), but Kentucky’s kids are crazy good. The Badgers only chance is Bohannon, Davis, and Leuer stay hot from outside, and Kentucky’s kids gack under the pressure of the Big Stage. I also have Purdue losing to Siena. I mean, 11 points in the first half in the Big Ten Tournament?!? They’re in trouble without Robbie Hummel. Also have Ohio St. making it to the Elite 8 and losing to Kansas, though I do think OSU can beat Kansas. Evan Turner is the best player in the country, I think. Got Michigan State losing to Maryland in the 2nd round; they just don’t seem inspired at all, and I got Minnesota beating Xavier, but then losing to Pitt. Kansas over Kentucky for the title, 88-86.

Good call on Cornell & Murray St.

I’m playing it safe for now: there is no way in hell UNC-CH will win this tournament.

Haha. I was actually joking with some of the college kids here at work and telling them how excited I was for Northern Illinois to be in the tournament and have a chance. If you don’t know, NIU sucks really bad as basketball. I am am Illini fan but living in Dekalb keeps me paying attention to NIU. They haven’t made the tournament since like 94 or something like that. This was the third year in a row they had a losing streak of about eight or nine games in row.

They talk about how there is a budget crisis at the college. I think if they cut the basketball program, they could save thousands.

By the way, I went 26-6 in the first round. Not too bad but I had Georgetown in the Elite 8 and Siena in the Sweet 16 so that kind of messed things up.

Scott, good call on the ‘Heels! I may as well use my bracket sheet for lining a bird cage or wrapping fish at this point. Purdue surprised me, and I think I may have been right about MSU; they just seem un-inspired, despite winning. The Badgers are going to have their hands full against Cornell. If they play like they did against Wofford, they’re going down.

On another note, my beloved Badger hockey team managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, losing 2-0 to St. Cloud State in the WCHA tournament in St. Paul. They should still get a #1 seed in the NCAA’s, but could drop to a 2. Everybody keeps saying that goaltending, just like the Blackhawks, is the Badgers weak point, but the goaltending was excellent yesterday. Just couldn’t put the damn puck in the net. And that’s with 2 Hobey Baker (hockey’s equivalent of the Heisman Trophy) finalists out of 10, Blake Geoffrion (Boom Boom Geoffrion’s grandson) and Brendan Smith.

Kansas and Villanova were two of my final four teams. They are both eliminated on the first weekend.

During the Kansas game, even though I had Kansas winning the whole thing, I was cheering for Northern Iowa. It’s fun to watch the mighty fall like that. And then I threw my bracket in the trash!

  7. MadCityMac Says:

UW Badger hockey vs. the Vermont Catamounts, Friday night at 8 on ESPN U, for those of you who have never seen good college hockey; a little slower than the NHL, but you will see future NHLers in these games!

I watched some college hockey on the Big Ten Network this past season. Some of those kids can fly.

Jake Dowell and Adam Burish played together in the Frozen Four I believe a few years back. Badger hockey has always been stacked with future NHL players.

  9. MadCityMac Says:

Fro, Jack Skille was also on that team, along with Brian Elliot, the goaltender for the Ottawa Senators. And Joe Pavelski from San Jose, and Tom Gilbert from the Edmonton Oilers. I know there are more. That team was REALLY stacked! Hopefully this years team can pull off the NCAA championship like that one did. Then again, that team never even had to leave the state during their NCAA run. Regional was in Green Bay at the Resch Center, and the Frozen Four was at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. Regional this year is in St. Paul, and the Frozen Four is at Ford Field in Detroit; I don’t know what the hell the NCAA is thinking with that, especially not knowing how they’ll have the rink laid out.
