I suppose there are some bright spots.
Heyward has improved at the plate and other bats are warming up. But last night’s bullpen meltdown at Fenway, and Anderson’s “performance” tonite are another matter.
“With everything that happened this month and being on the road a lot, I’ll take what we did right now and get on back home and try to build upon it. There’s not a negative to be found for me.” — Maddon, looking at how the Cubs did in the first month of the season
It’s a long season….but what do you think?

Hey Maddon, giving up 7 runs in the first two innings to the lowly Phillies is not positive. You’d better wake up! Schwarber is killing us leading off. Strop, Grimm, and Anderson are toast. Time to move in another direction hard head!

No effective bullpen, no World Series repeat.
End of.

Before last night, Cubs had the lowest ERA among bullpens. Agree with WarBear not leading off, maybe John Jay’s hot bat leading off could work. Really all the starting pitchers need to figure themselves out.

Seems like a league-wide issue with the starting pitchers. Was their a major rule change that has affected pitching?

…from earlier tonite (http://www.espn.com/mlb/recap?gameId=370502116):
“Lester, who is usually reluctant to make a pickoff throw in a game, caught Altherr trying to steal second in the third with a soft toss to second to get the Phillies outfielder.”
Hmmmmm…

So, Rondon serves up a 3 run shot in 9th…(slaps head)…Cubs lose.
May 6, 2017 at 8:59 am
And people wondered why Maddon used Aroldis Chapman so much in the World Series. There’s your answer. Rondon and Strop FUCKING SUCK.
May 6, 2017 at 10:20 am
Yes. I don’t see Strop or Rondon as dependable closers. At the time, I completely understood why Maddon used Chapman so much.
Wade Davis is ok, right? According to ESPN online, he’s pitched 4 innings in the last 7 days. 7 saves so far this season, and an ERA of 0.00
May 6, 2017 at 7:22 pm
Wade Davis is an improvement over Chapman in my opinion, if he can remain healthy. Strop and Rondon are inconsistent. Been that way for years. Edwards is promising. Grimm is garbage, a useless waste of a roster space. Anderson just got himself DFA’d after the first inning today. Long ways to go, but I would bet the Cubs deal for a starter and bullpen help at the deadline.
Right now, the Cubs are even a playoff team. Good thing there’s still five more months in the season.
May 7, 2017 at 9:32 pm
Grimm IS garbage…and they’re serving up too many fucking gopher balls.
They better figure out the pitching soon, the Cardinals are playing well.
May 8, 2017 at 1:02 am
….top of the 18th and Strop does it again. BARF.
May 8, 2017 at 1:40 am
What part of a 7.68 era do you not understand Stubborn Joe? Grimm and Strop are pure garbage. But, being insane as you are, you keep crossing your fingers for a better result.
Cubs are totally out of sync, from top to bottom.

Team doesn’t have the same motivation that they had the last two years. They’re just coasting through now. I’m not sure we’re gonna see anything much different until sometime during the second half of the season.
May 9, 2017 at 4:29 pm
“They’re just coasting through now.” Yeah, right to the bottom of the Central Division.
At least they won’t have to worry about signing Arrieta to a big long-term contract. They can sign him on the cheap after the performance he gave in Colorado today.
It’s not just him, the whole team has still got their heads in parades, talk shows, and goofy commercials. Baseball seems to be nothing more than a job to them now.
