1. First off, I wish that everyone had a safe Memorial Day weekend.
2. I would like to thank Fork and CT at Hockeenight for their gathering on Friday night at Galway Bay Pub near Lincoln Park. I ended up meeting and surprisingly getting along with Big Cheyenne, Morpehus, Mike D., Oleg, Thrillho, Start Kyle Orton, Tonker and wait for it…a drunk Irish Yeti. He did NOT bring his stat book. Sorry if I missed anybody else but anyway, thanks again guys for a fun night.
3. So that brings me this: We are still on schedule for the weekend of June 24th for Genre’s return home. Unfortunately, we only have Friday, the 24th and Sunday, the 26th. I was reminded the other day that I already had Saturday, the 25th booked for something else.
This gives us at least three weeks to figure this out. I am guessing Sunday, the 26th would be the best day. If not, we can all meet up either in Chicago or as we previously planned, in Kenosha. So please, let me know what day and location works the best.
May 31, 2011 at 12:07 pm
Really, you got along with Mike D and Thrillho?
…damn, maybe the Cubs will win a world series before the rapture.
Did Morpheus say DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM?
On a different note, I’m not going to have much time in Chicago…since Sat doesn’t work (?), maybe it’s best for me to meet in the city as I don’t want to miss out out on time with my mom/stepdad (they had something to do Saturday night). I’ll book a flight soon, let you guys know whether Friday or Sunday works best…
May 31, 2011 at 12:21 pm
My statbook is on my phone
May 31, 2011 at 6:22 pm
I believe Morph did say doom a time or two but in a calm voice. It was a fun time nonetheless.
May 31, 2011 at 6:53 pm
So had you met those guys before “in-person”?
Regardless, the internet is still SO KEWL.
May 31, 2011 at 8:44 pm
Nah. Actually, Friday night was the first time. Yeti and I engaged in some conversation, albeit he was drunk. People are very different in person than they are on the internet.
May 31, 2011 at 10:40 pm
Only a “juggernaut” like the Astros could put up a six spot in the ninth against the feared Carlos Marmol; causing the Cubs to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I’m going to go out on a limb here and cry “conspiracy theory”. I think the ownership is staging these losses. There’s no way possible that this team can be this bad…..is there? God, I hate these fucking ass-hats.
June 1, 2011 at 11:55 am
Yes, Fro and I got along quite well… we share a love of old Nintendo games. I think Fro was a little worried that everyone would hold him down and punch him or something. A good time was had by all. I don’t recall saying “DOOM” but I had several shots of Malort so it’s possible, I suppose.
June 1, 2011 at 4:18 pm
Swept by the Houston Astros at Wrigley Field… only the Cubs.
June 1, 2011 at 5:56 pm
Fuck this goddamned team. I’ve fucking had enough.
June 1, 2011 at 6:14 pm
Rickett’s said before the game according to reports that the team is fine and is only failing because of the injuries. Here we go again with the excuses.
They are almost 10 games out of first place and it’s only June 1st.
Wait til next year…again.
June 1, 2011 at 7:10 pm
Quade had said that the team had been dying for days like this (wind howling out). Why? To “rack up” a grand total of 3 hits? Fuck you and this team.
June 1, 2011 at 7:20 pm
Here’s my original post from when the Cubs acquired that flame throwin’ piece of shit known as Doug “superstar” Davis.
Doug Davis??? REALLY??? Christ, don’t we have anybody in the minors who’s teetering on being ready to make it up for a cup of coffee? This fuckin’ guys horrible. Hell, maybe Hendry’s gonna look up LaToya and Antonio to see if they’re interested in an encore performance. If I were Rod Beck’s agent, I’d call up ole Jimbo to see if I could get the Cubs to ink a deal for the deceased closer….hell, Hendry probably doesn’t even know he’s dead.
How’s he workin’ out so far? 0-4, 1.73 WHIP and 5.95 ERA (down almost a full point after today’s outing). Whether you feel that he pitched well today or not is immaterial at this point. This team is losing every day…even to the weakest teams in the majors.
June 1, 2011 at 11:08 pm
So Ricketts says the team is fine 9?), that’s telltale. WRONG! Ricketts is a an idiot.
The fact that this team can’t consistently beat the Pirates or the Astros tells us a great deal….the STINK.
I hear Zambrano is breaking bats over his knee (again)…uh oh…Lil Z may be getting ready to reappear, I still say he’ll crack under pressure.
Is anybody else here tired of our slow-starting, lazy, overpaid 3rd baseman who has racked up an astounding 2 hr’s thus far?
The more Quade talks, the less impressed I am.
All of you who support Hendry…or at least feel that he is not so bad…take a good luck at what is happening to HIS TEAM at THIS TIME.
Until Hendry is gone, this organization is DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED.
It could take years to rebuild…but what the hell, it’s already been 103!
June 1, 2011 at 11:08 pm
(?), not 9?)….sorry Mitch!
June 1, 2011 at 11:09 pm
“they stink”….sorry Mitch!
June 1, 2011 at 11:29 pm
“Is anybody else here tired of our slow-starting, lazy, overpaid 3rd baseman who has racked up an astounding 2 hr’s thus far?”
I am, but apparently our genius owner isn’t, neither are the other Einsteins in the front office.
I do not believe there is another professional sports organization in the history of sports as inept, pathetic, stupid, leaderless, and discomfited as the Chicago Cubs since 1909. And that includes the Los Angeles Clippers.
How in the world someone like Yeti, or the other bozos who frequently show up here to defend this wreak, can actually believe the garbage they shovel trying to make a case for this putrid pile of dung.
It truly boggles the mind.
June 2, 2011 at 6:27 pm
Truly the most fucked up franchise in history. Worse than the Clippers, worse than the dementia-addled Al Davis- led Raiders. Ricketts is a fucking dumb ass. Enjoy your statues asshole! Fire Moe Hendry, fire pencil-neck geek Crane Kenney NOW!!!
June 3, 2011 at 12:50 am
Morph,
You did say “doom” but not loudly or anything. We were reminiscing of the time you photoshopped the Grim Reaper in place of Tom Arnold with myself when I met him a few years back. A very disturbing picture but a job well done.
By the way, did you take the whole weekend to recover from those Malort shots?
June 3, 2011 at 9:58 am
Dear Tommy Ricketts: Please consider selling the Cubs!! HA HA HA HA HA
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=6621842
The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets are widely known to be in financial hot water.
But seven other major league teams, including the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers, are out of compliance with MLB rules regarding debt, the Los Angeles Times has reported, citing three anonymous sources familiar with a confidential briefing presented at last month’s owners meetings.
June 3, 2011 at 9:03 pm
Not that it’s been funny up to this point, but enough is fucking enough. This is a sad excuse for a professional franchise. 1 Goddamn hit through 6 innings; in a game that is basically a “must win” scenario for this team. Yeah, I know that it’s only June 3rd, and we’re only 7 out in the loss column, but we are fielding a competitive team….against anybody. Fuck, what does it take for management to say….”WE’RE DONE WITH THIS SHIT!!!”??? End the pain and misery already. This organization is outclassed in every category (pitching is atrocious). Dump the big payroll numbers, eat whatever losses you need to, but get rid of the dead weight and start with something new. I’d rather lose 100 games with an annual payroll of $40M, than lose 100 games with a payroll of $150M (or more). This is ridiculous and it needs to end….NOW!!!
June 3, 2011 at 9:52 pm
Sorry, not “we are fielding”….but rather “are we fielding” a competitive team?
June 3, 2011 at 10:25 pm
If the Cardinals don’t motivate you after getting swept by the MLB’s worst team, nothing will.
June 3, 2011 at 11:15 pm
The Ricketts family can kiss my ass. Sheeple personified.
They are are PATHETIC and in the end, I hope they lose their wallets…everyday that this shit continues “as-is” is a missed opportunity.
No accountability when you work for the Chicago Cubs. The perfect job for mediocre, underachieving — and overpaid — assholes.
June 4, 2011 at 1:17 am
Gentleman,
This is by far the worse team since the dip shits who were here in 1997 and those guys started the season 0-14. I am convinced that there are only two spots tied in for the future and that’s 2nd and SS. That’s sad to say when the payroll exceeds $100 million.
Zambrano seems to be the only one actually doing something and that’s hard to believe considering his antics last year. No other pitcher is worth a fuck.
The only thing we can do now as fans is to do something we don’t normally do and that’s root against our team. I don’t know if I have a “hunch” or not but I think if this losing streak can get to double digits, Hendry *may* be shown the door. If they snap it, he’s on board for another year or two.
Is it wrong for me root against MY team? Only if you want to see them clean house.
June 4, 2011 at 11:33 am
No…in this case it’s not wrong to root against the team.
The management is the problem and needs to be shown the door. The owner is a damned fool, unwilling or afraid to make a change. But if fans turn away, he’ll be forced to pay attention because in the end all he really cares about his money…
All kidding aside, you couldn’t pay me to go to Wrigley Field at this point in time.
Hendry might be a nice guy — who knows — but his misjudgments and actions have done extensive harm to this organization…it is ludicrous that he continues to be employed by Ricketts.
Regardless of what you think of Mark Cuban, it’s too bad he wasn’t cleared to buy the Cubs. He may be uber-rich but he definitely wants to win. Do you think he would put up with the nonsense Ricketts has? I doubt it…
The only reason I post here anymore is for the camaraderie…I enjoy the rants, the disagreements, the discussions…
Most everybody that posts here has a sense of humor, which is paramount if you’ve been a fan of the Cubs for 20 years or longer.
BTW, what do you gys think of the “new” hitting and pitching coaches?
BLOW THIS CRAP UP. It worked for the Florida Marlins!
June 4, 2011 at 7:01 pm
Yep, Pujols can’t wait to become a Cub!
June 4, 2011 at 7:46 pm
Bottom 12th
2 outs
all bases open
Jeff Samardzija on the mound
Pujols due up
How many managers pitch to him? How many pitch to him after they get down 2-0?
Seriously Quade… wow.
June 4, 2011 at 8:38 pm
I am going to agree with Ron on this one. It’s time to start rooting against them for regime change. This losing streak is now at 5. Keep it going fellas!
June 4, 2011 at 9:26 pm
Unbe-fucking-leavable!
June 5, 2011 at 1:52 pm
Yeti you are good at stats what is the cubs record and how many runs have they scored when the first two batters are barney and castro or castro and barney
June 5, 2011 at 4:10 pm
If I were Zambrano, I would want to punch Marmol in the mouth.
June 5, 2011 at 4:13 pm
What about quazimodo not learning his lesson again
June 5, 2011 at 4:14 pm
That Marmol guy is real serviceable!
You seriously cannot make this shit up. Really. You can’t.
The losing streak has reached 6! Let’s keep it going Scrubs!
June 5, 2011 at 6:23 pm
WOW!!! Enough said!!!
June 5, 2011 at 6:28 pm
Rothschild goes to the Yankees, and organization with a plan and a tradition that expects to win, and their pitchers actually improve.
Theriot goes to the Cardinals, another organization with a plan and a winning tradition, and he becomes a clutch hitter.
You watch, those guys the Cubs sent to the Devil Rays for Garza will be All-Stars within a couple of years, and Garza will be with another team when his contract runs out.
Don’t tell me organizational objectives, goals, plans, and personnel don’t matter.
June 5, 2011 at 6:54 pm
Go to chicago sports.com z called the team a triple a team he spoke the truth he will be gone….
June 5, 2011 at 8:29 pm
here’s the link Robert mentioned:
http://aol.sportingnews.com/mlb/story/2011-06-05/zambrano-calls-cubs-a-triple-a-team-after-cardinals-sweep
Is anybody else as DISGUSTED as I am?
Across the board, the Cubs are a complete fiasco.
1. The owner and his family are idiots, at least as far as the Cubs are concerned. They clearly know nothing about how to build a winning baseball oragnization. Or, maybe Ricketts is just a wimp that doesn’t have the guts to say “enough is enough” and make some major changes.
2. Zambrano has now created yet another distraction and/or controversy …this team is too feeble-minded to overcome it. I agree with what he said…but he shouldn’t have said it publicly. Who the fuck does he think he is? Sorry you didn’t get the win Lil Z, even though you pitched well….guess what, it happens all the time i sports. Here’s my take: Lil Z is still another overpaid asshole who in the end, will never be an ace because his “mind isn’t right”. He will fold when the going gets tough…
3. Quade’s comments piss me off, too. This is where a manager should step in and take charge. I have a feeling he is merely a puppet for the “powers that be”…hogtied, handcuffed. I’d like to see somebody in Cubs management really tell it like it is…FOR ONCE.
4. Many say that Jim Hendry is a nice guy and that may be true…is Bud Selig a nice guy, too? Who the hell cares…I’d like to see them both out of MLB.
YES Ernie; organizational objectives, goals, plans, and personnel DO matter. I’m not surprised at all that ex-Cubs are doing well elsewhere…it’s been happening for years!
Yes….keep losing, as there is NO CHANCE of winning it all with this roster and even more importantly, this management team.
Clean house, blow it up…..start over.
BARF.
June 5, 2011 at 8:40 pm
Another smart person who agrees with us, and he’s not alone:

illinoiscubfan posted: Zambrano was right. He just stated what any Cub fan with half a brain understands. This is at best a Triple A team with a Double A manager and Rookie league GM and owners. Boycott Wrigley Field until the owners stop the bleeding, fire Quade and Hendry and act like they give a damn!
BINGO.

June 5, 2011 at 10:36 pm
I wasn’t aware of Z’s comments until I checked up here again.
Unbelievable. I know some of you guys wanted him gone in the last couple years but he does deserve a lot of a credit. He has been pitching great all year as well as hitting the ball much better than a majority of the position players.
A 2-2 count for Marmol in the 9th and he puts it over the heart of the plate. What good pitcher pulls that shit? THROW IT OUT OF THE STRIKE ZONE YOU DUMBASS!
FIRE JIM HENDRY. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!
June 5, 2011 at 11:13 pm
Long time reader, infrequent poster. Don’t have enough time to comment as much as the regulars here, but since misery loves company, appreciate the debate fellas. (even Yeti). I understand how the stats can sometimes portray this team as better than their record suggests. But unfortunately, they are “doomed” to finish at the bottom of the NL, if not the majors, for the upteenth time over the course of my fandom (since 1984). When will the agony end? Not any time soon, apparently. Can someone please tell me why I shouldn’t have a mid-life crisis and convert to being a fan of my brother’s team on the South Side? I know they suck too this year, but at least they’ve won a WS in my lifetime! I actually led a 2-jet flyover on opening day 2005 for the White Sux, hexing them all the way, and waddya know…they win the WS that year! Talk about irony… Thanks, Fro, for keeping this site active; Genre, for being the “adult supervision”; and the rest of the regulars for telling it like it is…
I’ll be reading from afar, as my next duty assignment will be in Turkey…where I don’t think they play much baseball or even know about the travesty that is the Cubs (if only we could be so lucky!)
June 5, 2011 at 11:44 pm
Memo to Pittsburgh/Houston:
Good evening. We promise to keep the basement warm until you two decide to join us. So to you two we say: Watch out. We are coming for you.
Signed,
The Chicago National League Baseball Club.
June 6, 2011 at 10:50 am
@ navycubsfan: “Dave”, is that you? regardless, excellent post and thanks for the kind words although “adult supervision” is definitely pushing it (in my case)…ha!
I don’t have any good reason to discourage you from “converting”…my mom is a White Sox fan (she grew up on the South Side) and I was happy for her and Chicago when they one. In fact, I was optimistic that the White Sox winning it all would accelerate Hendry, Dusty and the other idiots’ departure…I guess I was wrong…again.
I was in Istanbul for a few days in 1992…another world indeed… All the Best to you & yours!
June 6, 2011 at 10:51 am
geez, I need espresso before I post…”when they WON”
Sorry Mitch.
June 6, 2011 at 12:48 pm
Good post, navycubsfan.
Why not become a Sox fan? Well, do you want to be a fan of a team that won the World Series or do you want YOUR team to win the World Series? Chasing previous World Series winners in the hopes that they win again can’t be a very satisfying experience (not that being a Cub fan is satisying). If you hate the Sox-which it sounds like you do, I don’t see how you could consider switching over to the dark side. What have the Sox ever done for you except make you miserable because they won before the Cubs?
Now, I can maybe see adopting a team as a strong #2 if you live near that other team-but rooting for the Cubs if they clash. If I lived near Philadelphia, I could probably root for the Phillies. There are more Cardinal fans than Cub fans where I live, but Cards are an enemy who play the Cubs all the time and I am too close to Chicago to “adopt” the Cards. I guess ultimately it depends on your personality. If I completely disowned the Cubs and went for another team, how would I feel if the Cubs ever friggin’ won the WS? Like I wasted 35 years for nothing. I could never feel the same about a new favorite team winning than if the Cubs won. Of course, the Cubs suck, and have no prospects. I just don’t follow them very closely, I don’t defect. I don’t think I could. I am pissed at the Cubs, I won’t go to their games or even watch them on tv anymore. I have other things to do, other sports to follow (my favorite teams in other sports have all one at least one championship) But if the Cubs ever get their act together, I won’t have to abandon another team or root against them.
June 6, 2011 at 4:11 pm
I have a feeling Zambrano will be traded soon, if a deal can be made. I’m ok with it and hope that it happens soon.
As many others are saying, this team is going nowhere and Lil Z has proven time & again that he is a liability, regardless of how well he has been pitching lately.
In fact this would be a great time to FIRE JIM HENDRY. Hint hint….
I just pray to the Great Spirits that Hendry doesn’t go into architecture when he loses his job…unless of course he focuses on designing cesspools….he’d excel at that!
June 6, 2011 at 6:30 pm
Not being a Chicago native, I’ve never had that northside-southside dynamic at work, so I’ve never disliked/hated the Sox the way I imagine most Northsiders feel? In fact, I remember asking somebody when I was a lot younger, “why can’t you cheer for the Cubs and the Sox; they’re in different leagues!” Their response was, “okay, you grew up in Madison-what side of town?” “East”. “Okay, do you cheer for Madison West or Madison Memeorial?” (high schools on the westside). My response was “of course not”! “well there you go!”, they said. Then it made sense. My point is that for me, it would never be a point of north or southside, just I could never cheer for a team that I didn’t grow up cheering for, but the funny thing is that I became a Cub fan in 1968, a Brewer fan in 1970 when they moved to Milwaukee, but I also liked the early ’70s Sox, with Bill Melton, Dick Allen, Wilbur Wood, Carlos May, etc. Kinda got away from that later in my teens, and if anything ever turned me off on the Sox, it was Harrelson and Paciorak-the worst! So while I don’t hate the Sox, I’d never adopt them as “my team”. On the flip side, Ricketts, Moe Hendry, Crane Kenney and company have turned me off on the Cubs. As Scott says, blow up the whole damn thing! A new ballpark, a new attitude! Stop playing in that urine-soaked hellhole that smells like Ronnie Woo Woo’s uniform! Quade is probably a nice guy, but he seems waaaaay in over his head-I’m happy for Ryno that he DIDN’T get the job handling these under achieving AAA players.
June 6, 2011 at 10:19 pm
Thanks for the words of advice all. Nemo and MCM are right…guess I just needed to hear from someone else what I know is true deep down: the Cubs are my team and I’m stuck with ’em…..crap. However, also like you said, we don’t have to put up with them either. I’ll just keep checking the scores from time to time (year to year, century to century!) to see if they ever get anything going. Thanks, Genre, for the well-wishes…I was always “worried” that the Cubs would make the WS while I was living overseas where it’s hard to watch games real-time and feel the excitement. Guess there’s not much chance of that happening for the next few years at least, huh? I also thought the ’05 season would cause the Cubs to change their losin’ ways…but nope! BTW, I’m not “Dave”…just another hopeless fan that enjoys the negativity and rants about this “team” we’re all doomed to follow…
June 7, 2011 at 12:22 am
navycubsfan, we had another poster some time ago…a transplant from the original site, I guess your post reminded me of him. Regardless, please check in here as you can..we’ll look forward to hearing from you when possible.
Yes, I guess most of us are “in the same boat”…no matter how pissed off we are at the idiots who own and run the Cubs — and the players who stink –we still hope for the elusive WS title in our lifetime(s)…
BTW, has anybody checked the latest odds on “Hell freezing over vs. Cubs winning a World Series”?
June 7, 2011 at 8:58 am
Genre…..Hell is now the overwhelming favorite in that race. In fact, I think a blizzard warning just went up for the northern and western sections of Hell. They’re expecting 15 to 20 inches of snow.
The Cubs forecast called for more of the same shit.
June 7, 2011 at 9:34 am
tick tock…tick tock…tick tock…tick tock…tick tock….
yes, some things never change (seemingly)
