On Christmas Day, I was able to watch the John Madden documentary on FOX. I made it a priority to do it that day and not delay it.
When the previews were going on the weeks leading up to it, I legit had a feeling something was off. This documentary could have been made a decade ago. Why now? Was Madden sick and they wanted to celebrate his life? It just seemed insane. Like they wanted to show appreciation for him while he could see it.
Then, a few days later, he left the world. I could not believe it.
My memories of him were seeing him on TV and of course, the video games. I’ve played nearly every game since ’94 and buy the new version every year. After seeing that documentary, I realized I took all of his work for granted. It’s just insane. There won’t be another like him. When he was on TV, what comes to mind are games involving the Cowboys, 49ers or Packers. Of course, the Bears sucked ass and therefore, Summerall and Madden didn’t call many of their games growing up. But the times they did, it was a treat.
Everything he did was iconic. When Super Bowls are discussed, the image of him being lifted up after the Raiders won in 1977. Talk about an image that is remembered forever.
The football world will never be the same.
